We are moving!

From 9 March 2026, Concussion Care will be seeing patients at our new Silverdale clinic.

While the location is changing, everything else remains the same — the same experienced team and the same personalised concussion recovery programmes.

Our goal continues to be helping people recover from concussion and return to normal life as quickly and safely as possible.

Recovery doesn’t start when symptoms disappear.

It starts when the right systems are identified and supported.

Many people don’t need “more rest” — they need better understanding of what’s actually going on.

Clarity is often the turning point.

Time helps injuries heal.

But time alone doesn’t retrain a dysregulated nervous system.

When symptoms persist, it’s usually because the system hasn’t recalibrated — not because you haven’t waited long enough.

Recovery needs direction, not just patience.

Screens aren’t just “tiring” after concussion — they can overload visual processing pathways.

When visual input isn’t being integrated properly, the brain works harder than it should.

Headaches, nausea, eye strain and fatigue are often the result.

This isn’t screen intolerance. It’s a processing issue.

Concussion recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Two people can have the same injury and completely different symptoms — because different systems are affected.

Effective care looks at which systems are dysregulated and how they interact.

That’s why generic advice often misses the mark.

You’re not lazy.

Your brain is conserving energy because it doesn’t trust its environment yet.

After concussion, the brain prioritises survival over motivation. That can look like fatigue, apathy, or shutdown.

Understanding this changes how recovery is approached — and how hard people are on themselves.

Many lingering concussion symptoms aren’t cognitive — they’re autonomic.

The autonomic nervous system controls heart rate, sleep, digestion, temperature, stress response and energy.

When it’s dysregulated after concussion, symptoms can feel random and unpredictable.

They’re not random. They’re signals.

“Your scans are normal” doesn’t mean nothing is wrong.

Standard imaging doesn’t measure how well your brain functions — only whether there’s visible damage.

Concussion is a functional injury.

That’s why people can look fine, test fine, and still feel completely unlike themselves.

One good day doesn’t mean you’re “better”.

And one bad day doesn’t mean you’re going backwards.

Post-concussion symptoms fluctuate because the nervous system is inconsistent — not because you’re failing recovery.

This up-and-down pattern is one of the clearest signs that regulation, not rest, is the missing piece.

You’re not anxious.

Your nervous system is stuck on high alert.

After concussion, the brain can lose its ability to regulate stress signals properly. That can feel like anxiety, overwhelm, or panic — even when nothing is “wrong”.

Naming this correctly is often the first moment people realise:
“Oh… this isn’t in my head.”

If rest alone fixed concussions, you wouldn’t still be here months later.

The reason symptoms linger isn’t because you’re not resting enough.
It’s because concussion disrupts how your brain and nervous system communicate.

Until that communication is assessed and retrained, rest just pauses life — it doesn’t restore function.

This is one of the most common reasons people feel “stuck” in recovery.

Waitangi Day 🇳🇿

Today is a day to pause and reflect - on where we live, the people around us and the shared story of Aotearoa.

It’s a reminder of connection, respect and the ongoing journey we’re all part of together. However you’re spending the day - with whānau, out in nature, or taking a quiet moment - we hope you’re enjoying the day in your own way.

Sending love to this beautiful place we call home 🤍
