First level primary healthcare is provided by 26 General Practices with 86 GPs and 71 Practice Nurses who service just over 70,000 enrolled patients throughout central Auckland in Auckland City, Avondale, Blockhouse Bay, Mt Roskill, Mt Albert, Morningside, Meadowbank, Grey Lynn, Orakei and Waiheke Island. While many of our services are directed towards individuals and illness, we are also focused on issues that impact on the wellness of specific groups and communities within our enrolled population, of whom 10% are Maori, 10% Pacific and 11% are Quintile 5 (NZ dep 9 and 10)

The PHO has responsibility for ensuring that current challenges in community healthcare are being met. These challenges include child and adolescent health, immunisation, mental health and long term conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular/heart disease.

Every year today - on July 28 - we celebrate World Hepatitis Day

Over 200 New Zealanders continue to die each year from hepatitis C even though we now have an easy test and an easy cure that can save lives.

One of the biggest challenges in getting people tested for hepatitis C is that the symptoms can be barely noticeable until a lot of damage has already been done, which means a lot of people living with the virus don’t realise they have it.
There’s also stigma associated with hepatitis C because it’s transmitted through contact with infected blood, so at-risk people are often wary of talking to a health professional or seeking a test.

The National Hepatitis C Awareness Campaign, with the theme, ‘Stick it to hep C’ – ‘Werohia te Atekakā C’ – was launched one year ago on World Hepatitis Day 2022, with the goal of eliminating hepatitis C as a major public health threat by 2030.

All it takes to find out whether someone has been exposed to hepatitis C is through a quick and easy finger-prick test!

Not to mention getting tested is a win-win. If you’re negative, you can put your worries behind you right away. If you do have hepatitis C, it can now be cured in just eight weeks for most people through a simple oral treatment that is completely free and has a success rate of up to 98%.
