10 years today we decided to start up again in the Drug Testing arena, to say that these last 10 years have been the most challenging and rewarding in all my years in the industry.

Going from excitement, worry, stress, happiness, more stress, then more excitement is all part of working for yourself and the joys of a start up company.

Not everyone can see your vision, unsuspected challenges are often put in front of us and most are out of our control, but we have had great support from our clients and partners, we have formed not only working relationships with but friendships.

The most important lesson I have learnt is people still do business with people not businesses.

A big thank you too Nicky Trevithick, and the rest of the team, as we are only as strong as our weakest link.

To all the companies that have come through the last 5 years of business great work, it has been a struggle for a lot of us with some not being as fortunate.

Looking forward to the next chapter for WorkCare

Thank you.

It was absolutely a pleasure to sit down and talk about what we do- and take away any fear or misunderstanding on how the testing is done -

After seeing how drugs were impacting our community, I looked at how we could combat the increase of drugs affecting family's and our community.
In 2004 I started to explore this more in depth and found the lack of resources, support and knowledge in this area was concerning.
After talking to several people and looking at options available at the time we come across drug screening, excited with this new venture we took it to the market, sad to say without much success in the community, the opportunity then presented itself to introduce this to the workplace and onsite workplace drug screening was born in NZ
I have seen a lot of changes in the industry and what a positive impact we have achieved, still on the front-line testing and loving it.
I am now ecstatic that our daughter Kennedy Hardy has decided to join us at WorkCare Ltd whilst studying her Bachelor of Health and Science, being the first of the second generation to join the family business. Hopefully getting as much pleasure and satisfaction as I have.

COVID – Not making it easy - Update

The Drug testing industry has taken a back step, with companies now focused on trying to keep the doors open and minimise the risk of spreading the virus, this would have a catastrophic outcome on the business and the safety of employers and employees if undetected in the workplace.
With more staff taking time off or not showing for arranged pre-employment drug test due to close contact this has put more pressure on the construction industry.
The last lock down we saw an increase in positive drug use, so this has created another issue of managing both risks whilst maintaining the safety of everyone.
Over the last few months we have been approached by our clients on how we can help with this, so we looked into the Rapid Antigen Testing (RAT) and partnered with Surgical Supplies.
After contacting Ashley Bloomfield directly and being informed that the Government would not be looking at introducing this testing we recognised the benefits of this to business owners so we took the initiative and started the process of establishing, procedures, training and purchased the devices.
This has now changed and the government are running a pilot scheme using RAT testing with some of the larger companies.
Over the last few weeks we have corresponded with numerous officials regarding the antigen testing, MBIE, Ministers. MOH only to be pushed from pillar to post, with no real answers to date.
We understand everyone’s frustration and still not sure why this process has taken so long but we are still pushing and working for this to be available for all NZ business as part of their health and safety plan in moving forward.

Employers and employees need to work together to slow the spread of COVID-19.
It is essential to do everything in our power to uphold the safety of employees and the general public.
To help with this as of the 18 October WorkCare will have the Rapid testing devices and will start COVID testing.
We have a two process response.
1: Rapid diagnostic testing with the use of antigen-detection –
This is a quick easy way to test that will produce a result within 15min, this will limit any risks, reducing further infection eliminating contact to other employees and preventing the risk of spreading of the virus.
This will have an option of an App that will hold results.
2: Collect saliva samples, with next day results.
The Saliva Direct method has been implemented in many laboratories around the world, with millions of tests successfully conducted.
WorkCare’s team are the pioneers in the Drug and Alcohol testing industry, over the years we continue to advanced and lift the bar creating the 1st fully paperless system in New Zealand for Drug Testing once again establishing our ascendancy in the industry.
Over the last 18 months due to COVID we have adapted our testing procedures, we understand the importance of insuring the safety of our team and yours. We have taken all of our years’ experience in the Drug testing industry and developed a robust testing procedure to insure the safety of all involved

You may have seen that the NZTA are actively promoting a campaign aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of drug-affected driving, something that is both valid and thought-provoking given the upcoming referendum on the legalisation of cannabis next month. What is troubling is that this campaign seems at odds at what the Transport Minister's own views are, which are that he had smoked ma*****na in the past and had found it relaxing. To quote Phil Twyford himself "I'll be supporting legislation because prohibition has failed and we need a better policy." There was a need to move to a tight regulation, with a harm minimisation approach, he said *

THC is a mind-altering substance Mr Twyford, tighter regulation and controls don't disguise this simple fact. This coupled with the proposed THC maximum potency level set at 15% under the control bill along with easier access to this drug would most surely see an increase in deaths and serious injury on our roads, not reduce them, contradicting what his own agency is trying to achieve. Perhaps this contradiction shouldn't be surprising given that the Ministry of Health is still actively supporting and working towards a smoke-free Aotearoa by 2025 !
