Aotea

Aotea Inspired by indigenous thinkers. Therapeutic skincare. Extracted, formulated, and bottled by hand on Aotea, Great Barrier Island.

At Aotea, we are committed to making high-quality therapeutic skincare products using New Zealand native flora that are all hand-made on Aotea, Great Barrier Island. We are inspired by mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) and this knowledge manifests itself in our range. Aotea is the Māori name for Great Barrier Island and it is here where we are from and where we grow the native flora we use (and extract their oils) and spin these into the products in our range. This is all done by our team on our papakāinga (land).

Aotea is no exception and was formed as part of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone around 15 million years ago.

Throughout the sand dunes at Whangapoua Bay, large deposits of pumice stone can be found offering as a distinct reminder.

Strong sun, constant wind, little shelter. Mānuka thrives where conditions are harsh, producing potent antibacterial and protective properties.

Māori tohunga observed this resilience — how the plant’s relationship with challenging conditions created qualities that could heal, protect and restore.

In our latest Journal, we explore the bioactive properties of mānuka honey — from its antimicrobial action to how it naturally hydrates and nourishes challenged skin.

For generations, Māori tohunga have paid close attention to the close relationships between environment, plant and hauora (wellbeing).

This raumati (summer), our Journal explores three native plants traditionally used in rongoā Māori — kawakawa, mānuka and harakeke — and the roles they have long played.

Our Story

We are inspired by Māori history and culture. We make a range of therapeutic goods that are steeped in rongoā Māori (māori remedial medicine). We use Kawakawa, Mānuka, Kūmarahou and Harakeke which all have a rich history of remedial use by Māori (and also our own community and family on Aotea). We grow these plants ourselves on our papakāinga, Aotea Great Barrier Island, and extract the the bioactive on site. We aim to create opportunity and employment for our community. We are undertaking research into the healing nature of the flora we use, particularly Kawakawa and Kūmarahou. We look forward to sharing this with you soon. Mauri ora.
