Aotea

Aotea Inspired by indigenous thinkers. Therapeutic skincare. Extracted, formulated, and bottled by hand on Aotea, Great Barrier Island.

At Aotea, we are committed to making high-quality therapeutic skincare products using New Zealand native flora that are all hand-made on Aotea, Great Barrier Island. We are inspired by mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) and this knowledge manifests itself in our range. Aotea is the Māori name for Great Barrier Island and it is here where we are from and where we grow the native flora we use (and extract their oils) and spin these into the products in our range. This is all done by our team on our papakāinga (land).

Harakeke (Phormium tenax, also known as swamp or common flax) grows across Aotea, resilient, deep-rooted, adapted to terrain that offers little.

The native flax has rigid leaves with a stiff keel and produces red flowers with upright seed pods. To obtain the oil, these pods are harvested before they open and pressed — producing a nutrient-rich oil, valued for both nutritional and skincare applications.

Formulated to support collagen production, skin regeneration, and restore deep hydration — Harakeke Night cream is loaded with powerful skin-supporting compounds:

—Linoleic acid is a highly effective natural moisturiser
—Phytosterols help reduce redness and irritation
—Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids provide antioxidant support
—Omega-6 works alongside oleic acids to encourage healthy cell turnover

Most night creams moisturise — our Harakeke Night Cream rebuilds.

Wild harakeke from Aotea delivers linoleic acid your skin can’t make on its own, the key to restoring a depleted barrier.

Applied overnight, when repair is at its peak, so you wake up restored — not just hydrated.

There is a particular wisdom in plants that have learned to heal themselves — one that Rongoā Māori understood long before dermatology confirmed it. Mānuka, harakeke, and kawakawa don't just survive exposure — they develop compounds that protect, heal and repair against the elements.

Our Skincare Pack is built around that same intelligence — a trio that brings it directly to your skin:

AM: Mānuka Day Cream
PM: Harakeke Night Cream
Weekly: Mānuka Honey Masque

Available in our flagship stores and at aoteahealth.com

The Mānuka Day Cream with raw 500+ MGO Mānuka honey. Calming, every time.

Healing properties, from Aotea’s flora to your daily skin routine.

Mānuka flowers once a year — under pressure, in exposed terrain. What it produces in that single harvest has been used in wound care, studied in clinical settings, and it's what we built our Day Cream around.

Head to the link in bio to read this week’s Journal, we unpack the science behind one of nature's most studied actives.

Aotea is one of the most exposed islands in the country: wind, salt air, harsh UV.

And still, once a year, mānuka flowers, producing honey exceptionally rich in Methylglyoxal (MGO).

Your skin knows exposure too: long days, dry air, invisible stress.

Our Mānuka Day Cream delivers that potency to your skin (with raw 500+ MGO mānuka honey) — calming irritation and supporting barrier repair.

Our Story

We are inspired by Māori history and culture. We make a range of therapeutic goods that are steeped in rongoā Māori (māori remedial medicine). We use Kawakawa, Mānuka, Kūmarahou and Harakeke which all have a rich history of remedial use by Māori (and also our own community and family on Aotea). We grow these plants ourselves on our papakāinga, Aotea Great Barrier Island, and extract the the bioactive on site. We aim to create opportunity and employment for our community. We are undertaking research into the healing nature of the flora we use, particularly Kawakawa and Kūmarahou. We look forward to sharing this with you soon. Mauri ora.
