𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Recent changes to national regulations mean that GPs are now permitted to assess, diagnose, and treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

After careful consideration, our practice has decided that we will not be offering ADHD assessments or diagnoses at this time.

This decision reflects our commitment to providing safe, high-quality care for all patients and to using our limited clinical resources fairly and responsibly.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐃𝐇𝐃 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬

1. 𝐀𝐃𝐇𝐃 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭-𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞

Although regulations have changed, there is currently limited practical guidance, training pathways, and standardised tools to support GPs to safely and consistently conduct ADHD assessments in primary care.

Without adequate training and support to meet best-practice standards, we believe it would not be responsible to offer this service.

2. 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭-𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐃𝐇𝐃 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞-𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠

A high-quality ADHD assessment typically involves:

Detailed clinical interviews

Collateral history (often from family, school, or workplace)

Screening for alternative or co-existing conditions

Careful risk assessment

Thorough documentation

This process usually requires multiple long appointments. Providing assessments at this standard would be time-intensive and potentially costly for patients.

3. 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐃𝐇𝐃 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬

GP appointment time is a limited resource. Offering ADHD assessments would:

Significantly reduce appointment availability

Increase wait times

Limit access for urgent and routine medical care

This would negatively affect equity and access for our wider enrolled population, which we are committed to protecting.

4. 𝐀𝐃𝐇𝐃 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚

The role of GPs in ADHD diagnosis and treatment is still developing, and national models of care continue to evolve.

At present, we believe ADHD assessment is best provided by services with dedicated expertise, time, and resources to deliver comprehensive assessment and ongoing care.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡

Although we do not offer ADHD assessments, we can:

Discuss your symptoms and concerns

Assess and manage related issues such as anxiety, depression, sleep problems, or stress

Provide referrals to appropriate specialist or private assessment services where available

Support your general health care alongside specialist ADHD treatment

𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞?

We will continue to monitor national guidance, training opportunities, and models of care.
If circumstances change and we are confident we can provide ADHD assessments safely and equitably, we will review this decision.

🚨𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞: 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 (𝟏𝟐-𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠)

A recent change has been introduced by the New Zealand Government regarding the length of some prescriptions for long-term medications

🔊𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱
The Government has introduced a policy allowing prescriptions of up to 12 months for certain long-term medicines in eligible patients.

This is intended to reduce the need for frequent prescription renewals.

🥼𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀
While we understand the intention behind this policy, as doctors our primary responsibility is patient safety.
We know that regular medical review plays an important role in monitoring effectiveness, side effects, interactions, and changes in your health.

For this reason, 12-month prescriptions will only be used where it is clinically safe and appropriate. This decision will always be made by your GP or Nurse Practitioner (NP), based on your individual health needs, not automatically applied.

👥 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲
This option may be considered for patients who:
– Have a stable, well-controlled long-term condition
– Have been on the same medication and dose for some time
– Do not require frequent monitoring or medication changes

💊 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁
Some medicines are subject to additional safety, legal, or funding requirements.
These include:
– Controlled drugs (such as certain pain medications, stimulants, or sedatives)
– Special Authority medicines

💊 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
– 12-month prescriptions may not be permitted, or
– Regular reviews, monitoring, or renewal of approvals will still be required

These safeguards exist to protect patient safety, and we will continue to follow all clinical, legal, and funding requirements.

❎ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴
– Regular medical reviews remain important
– Some medicines will continue to be prescribed for shorter periods
– You should contact us if your symptoms change or you have any concerns

You will still collect three months of medication at a time from the pharmacy, even with a 6 or 12-month prescription. You cannot collect 12 months of medication at one. There will still be one $5.00 prescription charge (if applicable) per item at the original dispensing, with no charge on repeats, as is currently the case

💭 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼
You do not need to take any action at this time. Your GP will discuss prescription length with you at your next appointment or prescription review.

We’d like to let our community know about an important update to our Walk-In Clinic services, 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝟏𝟐 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔.

🏥 What’s staying the same?
We will continue to offer walk-in care for our registered patients who have acute concerns or injuries requiring urgent attention.

👶 What’s changing for children?
Previously, children could attend the walk-in clinic for any concern. Moving forward, children will now follow the same criteria as adults — walk-in visits will be for acute concerns or injuries only.

💙 Why the change?
For non-urgent, complex, or ongoing concerns, booked appointments allow our doctors and nurses the time to:
• Review your child’s medical history
• Provide more personalised care
• Avoid rushed assessments during busy walk-in periods

This helps ensure a calmer, more thorough, and effective care experience for your child.

A Nurse Prescriber will continue to work alongside our GP in the walk-in clinic, providing support for a wide range of acute presentations.

We know it can be hard to get an appointment when you need one, especially after hours or at short notice. That’s why we’re pleased to let you know about the government-subsidised digital-health service that gives patients access to virtual GP appointments 7 days a week.

This service is designed to support you when we’re unavailable, not to replace the care you receive from us as your enrolled general practice. Continuity of care remains important, and we’ll continue to be here for your ongoing health needs.

CareHQ is a trusted digital health provider, for when you need care outside our usual hours or can’t get in to see us. They are online 7am – 10pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
