We are a nation built on adventure.
From the mountains to the rivers, from hiking to bungee jumping, mountain biking to kayaking ā outdoor pursuits are at the heart of what it means to be a Kiwi. These experiences arenāt just hobbies; they are part of our identity, our economy, our Olympic success stories, and the way we connect with the land and each other.

Thatās why we should be deeply concerned about the coalition government's move to cut outdoor education from our schools.
ā ļø
Outdoor education isn't just about camps and tramping trips ā it's about teaching leadership, resilience, teamwork, and respect for our unique environment. It builds skills that lead to careers in tourism, conservation, recreation, and sport. It creates pathways for rangatahi who thrive outside the classroom. Removing these opportunities from our education system risks deepening the divide between the haves and the have-nots, cutting off access for those who canāt afford private alternatives.
š
If we strip outdoor education from schools, we donāt just lose a subject. We lose future Olympians. We weaken our world-renowned adventure tourism industry. We lose touch with the whenua.
š„
We cannot afford to let this happen.

Outdoor Education gives young people opportunities they canāt always get in a classroom. It builds resilience, confidence, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. It keeps students engaged in school, especially those who struggle in traditional settings, and connects them with Aotearoa.....
