During sleep, the neurons in our brain shrink to about 60% to allow a fluid called cerebral spinal fluid to come in and wash out our brain. This allows our brain to make room for new learning and to consolidate the memories and learning that we want to keep.
Healthy sleep is the best thing we can do for aiding our memory.
If you are finding that you are becoming very forgetful, don't brush it off as an 'age thing' but do a check first on whether you are getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep a night.
