Although we’ve stayed connected in different arenas over the years, this was our first proper training session together in more than 15 years—since the early days of my first gym launch at Quest Health Clubs, Ferrymead, Christchurch.

We just cruised up tonight, it’s been a busy week, and we had a Xmas lunch today for our team at so it was good to get moving again this evening ki taku mātāmua 🫶🏽

Our kaupapa at Te Ranga Ihupuku today was all about training our energy systems, today we worked on our anaerobic system and a specific zone; but before that the girls had to work out what their max heart rate is.

Working sets were 90-100% max effort
120 seconds slow active rest
Fuel - carbohydrates and protein

Last week’s touch session was filled with basic learnings for the girls, from foot work and ensuring they are pushing off their feet with power when back-tracking on defence to ensuring you create the visual dexterity to look over both shoulders when retreating fast to the defence line.

The Canterbury Rugby League women’s team brought the energy and determination as we introduced them to wrestling and movement drills. It’s about more than technique, it’s about confidence, resilience, and backing yourself no matter what.
