Leadership and compassion

Do you think leadership and compassion work side by side in aged care ?

For me- absolutely! And I see you all offering the same compassion every day !

Compassionate and respectful care (CRC) is an essential element for health care providers (HCPs), which builds a positive environment and intimacy among health care professionals, patients, and families.

A study of 349 facilities concluded that
Compassionate and respectful care among facilities requires an actual demonstration of humanity and kindness to promote person-centered practice for their residents.

To achieve this , the study concludes that the health care curriculum, improving the health care ethics skill gap, designing appropriate policy to reduce workload, and promoting patient rights is paramount to creating healthy person centred care .

Very Proud to come home to my very own certificate and award for duty during the Covid 19 pandemic from PM Hipkins.

Seems so long ago - but at the time I managed 13 aged care facilities through the delta wave in 2020-21 working on and off the floor with the RNs and affected residents .

Not one day off in 90 days !

What an experience that was !

Still , recognition is always wonderful , it’s bring light to the day and makes everything worthwhile!
This recognition has definitely made my day ! 💓🙌

Do you have a story that you would like to share with the NZACN?

Have we need to get the positive stories about aged care out into the sector !

Please email me at epcconsultancynz@gmail.com to give me a blurb on why you work in aged care and why it’s so important to you !

We want to hear from all disciplines/ regional managers , managers , clinical managers , NPs, care givers , RNs, household and kitchen staff !

You can keep you name anonymous, we’d just love to hear why you love working In the sector!

Here is some amazing feedback that a year one student nurse delivered to our care facility manager last week ❤️

Over my life, I have had very little experience working with the elderly. I had visited a rest home regularly to talk to a friend who lived there, but apart from that, my knowledge was limited.

Working in aged care means that you get to be a part of peoples lives on a day to day basis which is something so valuable. This is not the case in many other areas of nursing which is one of the reasons why aged care is so unique.

Another thing that I have come to appreciate about aged care is the amount of work and effort that goes in to keeping the residents, safe, well and happy. At every changeover, there are summary's of each of the residents and this brings different proble

Aged care has so much variety and every day has different challenges. I have come to understand that aged care is far from boring and that there is actually a lot of skill involved in the day to day cares of residents.

So overall be opinion on aged care has changed significantly through my placement and I am very glad to have had this experience. It has given me a new perspective on aged care nursing.

Working in aged care is wonderful, it's interesting and it's challenging. This is something that will stay with me throughout my nursing training.

Repost ; It’s important for our messages to get out to the wider political spectrum and leaders in healthcare so they hear our voices messages and understand the problems we face in aged care .

This is why we are inviiting interested politicians to hear our voices at the NZACN.

We aim to be politically neutral and offer a safe place for all our members but it’s also fantastic that some politicians from the national party want to visit and hear what we do !

We will forward on our stories on your behalf !

Are you a passionate supporter of aged care wanting to engage in innovative proactive discussion about how we can help change the facof aged care as an exciting and rewarding career choice?

She said, “Don't call the doctor, I want to fall asleep peacefully, with your hand in mine.” He told her about the past, how they met, their first kiss. they didn't cry, they smiled. They didn't regret anything, they were grateful. Then she repeated softly, 'I love you forever!' He returned her words, gave her a soft kiss on the forehead. She closed her eyes and fell asleep peacefully with her hand in his. Love is really all that matters because everyone comes into this world with nothing other than love and leaves with nothing other than love. Think about it. Profession, career, bank account, our goods are just tools, nothing more. Everything stays here. So just love….Love those that really love you. Love, as if there was nothing more important in your life.❤️

his article is really interesting for many reasons and can be compared in some respects to the aged care sector.

Short staffing, toxicity, poor workplace culture and lack of recources all contribute to errors and mistakes in the workplace!

This can happen whether well staffed or being understaffed.

Burnout out in aged care is real and leads to low moral. All the above factors being interlinked and part of the overall problem.

While we wait as a sector to be heard - we need our strong leaders to come together from all different disciplines in a collaborative constructive and inovative way to start to bringing brave and unique solutions to the table.

I could harp on about this for hours , but we need action now with dedicated individuals to start the journey together.

I feel so humbled over the last few weeks - I have linked in with some amazing individuals offering support from around the sector. The work they do is truely amazing. Thank you for your offers of help encouragement snd expertise!

This is leading to some interesting opportunities to link in with like minded people and gain momentum - and I truely feel the opportunity is there to collaborate together and change the direction and face of elderly care .

Let’s work together as one big Heathcare whanau to create positive change and direction which will ultimately help to enhance and change the lives for our older population!

One of my students always adopted the saying ;

“Together we can”

And we can !

A great article about how we can help or residents who suffer from loneliness and negative thinking patterns.

This is so common in agedcare ,which is why volunteering is so essential in aged care settings.

For those that don’t have close family support , life can get hard , lonely , and it can be difficult for our elderly to see the light.

Loosing independence is difficult and emotionally exhausting for our elderly and they need support in all of the areas this article outlines.

Having a companion to spend special time with is imperative!

Love our elderly- become a volunteer - spread the love ❤️
