Tired of feeling like a contortionist during feeds? You’re not alone! As a lactation consultant and mum, I know the real secret to a sustained breastfeeding journey isn’t finding one perfect hold, it’s having a flexible toolkit!

My personal favourites are the deeply restorative Reclined (Laid-Back) and Side-Lying positions (absolute lifesavers for postpartum recovery and maximising much-needed rest!). They harness gravity for a naturally deeper latch and more comfortable feeds.

However, to feel truly confident feeding in public, every mother should master a secure seated hold, like the Cradle or Cross-Cradle. They are the powerhouses for on-the-go discretion!

SWIPE to see your photo reference guide.

Which of these positions are you currently relying on, or which hold presents the biggest challenge right now?

Let me know in the comments! I’ll share some advanced tips and troubleshooting on the most requested position in a follow-up post. 👇

The New Parent Hack That Will Save Your Sanity (And Your Time!)

If you have a healthy, full-term baby, stop spending precious hours sterilising all those pump parts and bottles. Get that time back.

For healthy, full-term infants, thorough cleaning in hot, soapy water is enough for good hygiene of your breast pump parts and breastmilk bottles.

That means you can ditch the daily sterilising and focus on a thorough wash.

đŸ”„ BONUS TIME-SAVER: THE FRIDGE HACK

Want to push the time savings even further? Many parents use the “Fridge Hack” to store pump parts in the fridge between pumping sessions, only washing them thoroughly once per day. It’s a game-changer!

Want to know more about safe breastmilk storage times (including the Fridge Hack) and the best cleaning routines?

The advice is outdated: Your baby is NOT waiting for you to give in.

Stop feeling guilty that your little one is “manipulating” you or is “stubborn” about taking a bottle.

The Body & Solution

Bottle refusal is a common source of parental stress, and the common fix”just leave the room” or “let them get hungry”, often makes it worse.

Here’s the truth: Bottle feeding and breastfeeding are two completely different skills! đŸ€Ż

Your baby isn’t choosing one over the other; they are simply defaulting to the suck pattern that’s easier and more familiar to them, just like an adult defaults to a skill they’ve mastered. This is a skill issue, not a behavioural issue.
It’s time to stop fighting your baby and start supporting their learning journey. You can teach them how to use a different latch and suck pattern for the bottle, leading to a much smoother feeding transition with less stress and fewer tears.

Ready to ditch the outdated guilt and learn the supportive techniques that actually work?

💬 Comment ‘BOTTLE’ below and I’ll send you my quick guide on overcoming bottle refusal without the drama!

There’s a right way and a wrong way to generate a freezer stash!

At the end of the day, generating a freezer stash is always an oversupply. The key is to create one that doesn’t impact your overall feeding.

Key rules include not taking away from what your baby will be having first and maintaining consistency so your body has a chance to keep up. Consistency is crucial for generating that little oversupply and also for winding it back down.

Now, I never encourage families to have a freezer stash because most of them don’t really need it. However, I understand that it can ease some stress or provide comfort. So, I’d rather you have the right information to do it safely rather than the standard “just don’t do it” advice, which isn’t exactly helpful.

Did you feel the pressure to have a stash?

Thinking of building a small freezer stash? I see so much dodgy advice online, and I hate it!

While most parent don’t need need a stash, I totally get why you want that peace of mind.

My job is to make sure you do it safely, without the headache of oversupply, mastitis, or disrupting your amazing feeding journey.

The message I wish I read 5 years ago when I was in the thick of it.

First time around everything was new and now this time around you think you should know better, be better, do better. But the reality is this is also new - even the second time around.

It’s a different baby, a different littler personality and to top it off you don’t get that same respite you did to “sleep when they sleep” because you have a toddler who’s whole world is just changed. And trust me they let you know about it

Give yourself grace, be patient, ask for help (it’s a sign of strength you know). You can do this. And for the days that feel like you can’t eat some chocolate and put the tv on. You got this.

Second time mamas what would you add to the list?

It would be nice, though, wouldn’t it?

When you’re sitting in an antenatal class, you’re often fed this lovely story about how your baby will eat, p**p, and sleep every 3 hours. Which sounds a little overwhelming, but perhaps manageable.

Then, when they arrive, you quickly realise your tiny new boss hasn’t read the manual. Babies aren’t born with the ability to tell time, and their feed frequency fluctuates massively—feed to feed and day to day!

Some days, you’ll be stuck on the sofa, barely able to move between nursing or bottle sessions. Other days might feel like you’ve got a bit more structure and routine. Both are perfectly normal, so don’t be stressing yourself out trying to force it!

Trying to fight their natural, on-demand rhythms simply isn’t worth your energy. Do your best to roll with it, because your energy is much better spent cuddling your little one.

Remember this: Those feeding “schedules” are guidelines of minimums, not a rigid rule book. Trust your instincts and trust your baby. You’re doing a brilliant job!

What’s the biggest difference between what you expected about newborn feeding and the reality?
