breastfeeding week 🤍
This was taken just hours after Otto was born — all 9 pounds 6 of him. I was still catching my breath when his big sister climbed up beside us and latched too. His first feed became a tandem one — unplanned, instinctive, and a little bit magic.

Freshly postpartum, feeding two babies, body buzzing from birth — I was wrecked, raw, and running on hormones… but also? Completely invincible.

I know Breastfeeding Week can stir up a lot — pride, grief, joy, frustration, love. However you fed or are feeding your baby, I hope you know there’s no one right way. What matters most is that you and your baby are held, nourished, and supported — however that looks.

👊🏻THE KEY TO HAVING THE BEST DAMN EPIDURAL BIRTH 👊🏻
Often we hear all the doom and gloom when it comes to epidurals.
Yes they absolutely come with a raft of negative side effects like
👎🏻Slowing down labour
👎🏻Dropping mums bp and sometimes baby’s heart rate
👎🏻Increase in need for forceps + suction cup births
However, if we use the epidural at the right place and time we can minimise these side effects and maximise the positives! Yes it does have positives….It can
👍🏻Allow mama to sleep especially in labour that has gone on for days
👍🏻Allow baby to turn and get into a good position for birth
👍🏻Lower mum’s BP in cases where it is high or Pre-eclampsia.
An epidural is the highest form of pain relief medicine can offer you for labour - it is the BIGGEST gun. It is important we respect it for what it is and therefore only pull it out when we have exhausted all other options and when the need for it means the positives will outweigh any potential negatives or side effects.

INTRODUCING OUR NEW FACILITATOR - KIRSTY 🥰
My name is Kirsty and I am so excited to be part of the team at Authored!

I was inspired to become a midwife after my youngest son was born at home. After birthing 4 children I had seen and experienced the most incredible care at the hands of midwives and felt such a strong pull to follow in their footsteps. Connecting with families in the community and being invited into their worlds during such a vulnerable and precious time is such an incredible gift. Sadly In 2022 after practicing as a homebirth midwife I was unexpectedly diagnosed with cervical cancer and abruptly had to stop my work as an LMC midwife.

After battling with cancer I found myself missing working in the birth world but unable to return to the demanding nature of community midwifery and by chance found myself teaching antenatal education and absolutely loving it! The ability to connect with families during their pregnancies offering support, information and community brings me so much joy and I am so excited to be continuing that pathway with Authored. I currently also work casually at Christchurch Women's on birthing suite as a hospital midwife. On the rare occasions that I have free time outside of busy family life I enjoy reading, painting and I have a pretty extreme addiction to stationery!

Oh man I’m so sick of the old “at the end of the day you got a healthy baby so that’s all that matters right”
It’s birth trauma awareness week and I want you to know, I see you, your feelings and experiences are valid.
Even if you didn’t have it as bad as someone else, you had a “normal” birth, you felt some aspects of your birth were positive, or you didn’t feel it was traumatic at the time…. No one can define or characterise birth trauma but you.
There is so much more to the childbirth continuum then just a healthy baby.
1 in 3 experience birth trauma. You are not alone 🧡🤍

"On Tuesday 28.02.2023 at 8pm I went into Christchurch Women’s to be induced. I kept the mindset that decisions were mine, setting up the room with my candles, essential oil diffuser, hypnobirthing breathing tracks - I was so ready. They hooked me up to the monitor and started me on my first of many doses of misoprostol from 10pm."
