Among the bright lights and festive cheer of the holiday season, the simple glow of a candle can offer immense peace. At Simplicity Funerals Christchurch, we highly value the quiet rituals that help us connect with those we miss.

Why Light a Candle for Remembrance?

Lighting a candle is a timeless and gentle way to honour a loved one. It’s an easy, yet powerful, act of remembrance that you can incorporate into your holiday routine:

A Symbol of Presence: The steady flame is a beautiful symbol of the spirit and life that continues to influence you.

Creating a Sacred Space: By placing it in a special spot - like your dining table or mantelpiece - and pausing for a few moments, you create a momentary sanctuary for memory and reflection.

Shared Comfort: If you are gathering with whānau, lighting the candle together can be a shared acknowledgement of the person who is missing.

If you are seeking community and support this festive season, we warmly invite you to join us at our Christmas Remembrance Service. It is a peaceful gathering dedicated to honouring all who are dearly missed.

Grief during the holidays can feel incredibly isolating — but you don’t have to walk through it alone.

This time of year can magnify the empty chairs, the missing voices, and the traditions that feel too heavy to carry. And yet, even in the middle of deep loss, moments of connection can offer gentle light.

Across Aotearoa, many funeral homes host remembrance services where you can sit quietly, light a candle, or simply be present with others who understand this kind of pain. These gatherings honour your loved one while giving you a safe space to breathe, remember, and feel supported.

On the hardest days, even noticing small moments — a warm breeze, birdsong, a favourite song — can provide a brief pause from the weight of grief. These tiny flickers of light don’t erase your loss, but they can help guide you through it.

If this season feels overwhelming, consider attending a remembrance service hosted by one of our member funeral directors. It’s a space to honour the person you love and to feel less alone.

You deserve compassion, connection, and a place to remember — especially at this time of year.

As Christmas approaches, so too does the beautiful tradition of decorating our trees. For those missing a loved one, this can be a poignant time. We suggest creating a Memory Ornament as a special way to keep their spirit close.

Here's how: Choose an ornament: It could be a cherished photo, a small keepsake that reminds you of them, or a simple bauble you decorate with their name, a significant date, or a symbol of their life.

The ritual: Each year, as you place this ornament on your Christmas tree, take a moment to remember them. Share a story, reflect on a cherished memory, or simply hold them in your heart.

It's a small act that can bring a lot of comfort, reminding us that they truly shine in every twinkle light. 💙

Dear Team Simplicity

You may have noticed that summer 🌞 has arrived at full throttle this week. I won’t complain – I take ice blocks and a nap 💤in the shade over a walk in the rain any day! But there are a few things that make the really hot days much better: more ice blocks of course, but also my super fancy cooling bandana. Mum puts it in the fridge, and when it’s nice and cool, she puts in around my neck. It keeps me super comfy for hours – by which time the heat has usually realised it can’t get me, and disappeared.
Then the bandana goes back into the fridge until the next heat attack. Amazing, don’t you think?
Love, Belle🐾🐾

PS: I was so sad to not come and meet you at the sausage sizzle on Saturday. I had even practiced my "I have not eaten in minutes" face to get a sausage 🌭, but mum said no because we had to go to the wedding of her best friend. It was a lovely day though - I hope yours was too.

The holiday season is a time of joy for many, but for those experiencing grief, the absence of a loved one can feel amplified. At Simplicity Funerals Christchurch, we understand that finding meaningful ways to navigate this time is so important.

The quote in this beautiful image - "They shine in every twinkle light, and glow in every star. They are still with us, always." - reminds us that our loved ones are with us.

This year, we encourage you to incorporate a gentle tradition to remember them, and to seek solace in community:

'Attend Our Christmas Remembrance Service' - We invite you to find comfort and shared understanding at our special service. It is a quiet, reflective event dedicated to honouring the lives of those we miss.

'Gift of Giving in Their Name' - Donate to their favourite local charity or volunteer for a cause they cared about here in Canterbury.

'Create a Memory Moment' - Set aside a specific time during your celebrations to look through photos or share a funny anecdote about them.

Remember to be gentle with yourself this season. There is no right or wrong way to grieve.

What is one special way you plan to remember your loved one this Christmas? We invite you to share your traditions below to help comfort others in our community.

Jamie managed some time after work to get out in the Port Hills is a vital reminder that self-care isn't selfish - it's essential. This connection to the land helps clear the mind and replenish the spirit.
