John Rhind Funeral Directors has served the Christchurch & Canterbury communities since 1881.
We understand it is the small personal details that matter when arranging a funeral and it is the extra service that makes the difference.

Our goal is to raise funds for Bowel Cancer NZ to support patients, raise awareness and fund research to beat bowel cancer.
It will be a good challenge for us as we remember while we raise funds.
If you are able please sponsor our challenge to save Kiwi lives.

A big day for Rhinds today as senior Administrator Jane Flutey brings her 27 year career to a close. Jane is soon to head off for an extended visit to family in Ireland but we can’t let her go without acknowledging her outstanding contribution to the firm. A friendly and calm voice on our phones Jane has done her bit in assisting thousands of families over her years with us. We’ll miss her laughter and the banter but we thank her for all she has done and wish her a long and happy retirement

As the year draws to a close we reflect again on the privilege it has been to serve families in their time of bereavement throughout the past year. We understand that for many this will be the first Christmas without a beloved family member and that the joy of Christmas will be tinged with sadness. The whole team at John Rhind wish you all a peaceful and blessed Christmas with your families and loved ones, and every happiness for the New Year

Hard to believe that this time a week ago athletes from all over New Zealand were arriving for the 2025 Special Olympics right here in Christchurch.
We are so proud of all the achievements and results of all the athletes who competed. A big shout out to all the volunteers for their support to make it such a success. We had staff who both volunteered and had athletes competing.

John Rhind Funeral Directors was originally established in 1881 by the brother in law of the first John Rhind, Herbert Langford to provide funeral services for the people of Christchurch. In 1906 John Rhind, whose name the firm bears now, joined the firm and it traded as Langford and Rhind for 14 years until Herbert sold his interest to John Rhind who continued to run the firm with the assistance of his sons until his death in 1944.
Over 5 generations, many Rhind family members have had involvement with the family funeral business. John Rhind was manager from 1958 until 1990, after which Graeme Rhind took over until 1995. From there Steven Rhind managed the business until 2002 whereby long term John Rhind employee Tony Garing has taken over the reins. The Rhind family association is still strong with Nick Rhind (Graeme’s son) remaining in the business as a funeral director.
John Rhind Funeral Directors is just one of a few Canterbury businesses that, after more than a century, is still operating from its original location. There are new buildings now, including a beautiful chapel and nearby reception lounge, but the business is still located at the London Street premises where the firm originated in 1881. A few years ago, John Rhind Funeral Directors opened an office in an historic building in central Kaiapoi to better serve the North Canterbury community. After the 2011 Christchurch Earthquakes this office relocated to Williams Street, Kaiapoi in a renovated cottage.
Over 135 years we have grown to become one of Christchurch’s foremost funeral firms, with a reputation for professional and compassionate service.
Our team pride themselves on being able to offer a full range of funeral services and providing exceptional care, which is friendly and above all sincere. Our strong reputation comes from our experienced funeral directors and support staff who are passionate and dedicated, to ensure families can have peace of mind at a very difficult time. It is important to know that you can depend on our professionalism to help you with all the arrangements and details to ensure a funeral service flows smoothly
We offer a modern and comfortable chapel, with its beautiful garden beyond the altar window. Our catering lounge, serves a tempting array of savouries, sandwiches, and cakes and is a popular venue for gatherings after the funerals.
