Hayfever management 🌿

As well as using nasal sprays, antihistamines and eye drops, reducing your exposure to pollen is one of the best ways to help manage hayfever symptoms.

Pollen release is favourable on warm, dry, windy days and usually occurs in the morning.
During this time of the day we recommend the following tips for managing your symptoms:

- Staying indoors and keeping windows closed as much as possible

- Keeping windows closed while driving and using a ventilation system that filters out pollen

- Having tissues on hand at all times and wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes

- Removing allergenic plants from the garden (often imported species). New Zealand natives and brightly coloured flowers are usually low allergenic.

- Taking spring/summer holidays in costal areas where pollen is blown inland

If you have any questions regarding allergy testing for hayfever symptoms you can give us a call or email us at admin@allergyservice.co.nz

Oral Allergy Syndrome 🌿

Do you ever find yourself with an itchy or scratchy mouth or throat after eating raw fruits or vegetables? Do you also suffer from allergic rhinitis (hayfever)? It may be that you have Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS).

Around 50-70% of those with a pollen allergy are likely to experience Oral Allergy Syndrome. This is because the proteins in some fruits and vegetables are similar to the protein in various pollens, (these are also known as cross reactive proteins). When eating these particular fruits or veggies, the immune system mistakes the proteins for those of a pollen allergen and causes the itchy/scratchy mouth or throat.

Tips for reducing OAS symptoms:
- Where possible, avoid the raw fruits and vegetables that trigger symptoms, particularly during the pollen season
- Cooking or baking fruit & veggies will help break down the protein causing the allergy reaction
- Peeling is also another good method to use as most of the OAS-inducing protein is located in the skin

If you have any questions around Oral Allergy Syndrome or Hayfever you can give us a call on 03 361 0400 or email us at admin@allergyservice.co.nz

Do you wake in the morning with a congested or runny nose, sneezing and or itchy eyes?

For those who experience Allergic Rhinitis (Hayfever) symptoms all year round, it can sometimes be a sign of a House Dust Mite allergy.

It is not about cleanliness. These Dust Mites are found everywhere that humans shed skin. Most commonly, pillows, bedding, carpet, soft furnishings, clothing and soft toys.

Though it is impossible to completely rid your home of House Dust Mites, there are things you can do to reduce your exposure:

- Washing sheets weekly in hot water (if you aren't able to do hot water washes, you can add tea tree or eucalyptus oil to the wash)

- Replacing pillows and duvets every 1-2 years or using a "House Dust Mite specific" pillow and mattress protector.

-Removing sheepskins and woollen underlays in your home

If you think you may have a House Dust Mite allergy, this can be diagnosed by a visit to our allergy doctor and nurse, who can perform simple skin prick testing and discuss various treatment/management options available to you.

Allergy management 🌿

Regular use of antihistamine medication in combination with nasal sprays and eye drops is optimal for preventing/ managing symptoms of seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (Hayfever).

Many antihistamines, nasal sprays and eye drops are available on prescription from your GP, however some are not funded. For advice on these, you can visit your local pharmacist.

Other lifestyle measures you can incorporate to manage hay fever symptoms include:
- Showering after outdoor activities where there has been lots of pollen exposure
- Wearing sunglasses to reduce pollen that gets into the eyes
- Using re-circulated air in the car when pollen levels are high
- Drying bedding and clothing inside or in a dryer

If you are still struggling to control your symptoms, you can give us a call or send us an email to chat further.
