Hearing Excellence is a Canterbury based audiology clinic that prioritizes patient centred care. As Hearing Excellence is privately owned and managed by audiologist Jeanine Doherty, you can be confident that we are independent from all hearing aid manufacturers. Instead, Hearing Excellence focuses on ensuring all patients feel welcome and comfortable as our audiologists work to meet your unique communication needs. Our continuing patient survey is certainly a reflection of this, with 100% of our patients saying they would recommend their friends and family come to Hearing Excellence.

Christmas 2024
Can you believe how fast the year has zipped by? It has been another one full of challenges for small businesses like ours. Luckily the tricky moments are offset by the pleasure we can take from looking after our lovely patients.
We close at noon on Tuesday 24th December and re-open fully on Monday January 6th 2025.
Open clinics for small repairs run from 10am-11am only on:-
Friday 27 December
Tuesday 31 December
Friday 3rd January 2025
All the very best to you and yours for a safe and restful Christmas time from us all at 89 Ferry Rd.
What is not to like about these December pictures? Monarch caterpillars, Christmas trees and cabbage trees in flower.

MERRY CHRISTMAS for 2023
Another year has zipped by and it has been a messy one here – the supply chain remains patchy and recently we had a run of staff illnesses. We apologise if you were affected by the schedule changes.
As we near the break, it is probably best to act now if you need anything ordered from the suppliers … or even just to stock up on batteries and filters. If you think you are due for an ear-nurse visit, we suggest you arrange this now for before Christmas as they will also be shut for the break.
OUR HOLIDAY HOURS 2023/2024 ARE:-
CLOSING at 3pm Friday December 22nd 2023 and re- opening fully January 8th 2024.
OPEN CLINICS for small repairs and consumable purchases will be available on:-
Thursday, December 28th 2023 from 10am-11am only.
Wednesday, January 3rd 2024 from 10am-11am only.
On Thursday January 4th and Friday January 5th 2024 we have both OPEN CLINICS running i.e. the 10am-11am and 2pm-3pm usual hours … plus we are offering a few appointment sessions.
If you want to be seen then, when the traffic is lovely and light, call us soon.
Here are some of the decorations in the clinic this year plus some lovely Canterbury peonies.
ALL THE BEST TO YOU AND YOURS FROM OUR TEAM.

Christmas 2022 Hours
Another year gone by ... and what a tricky one it was for us all.
The clinic closes at 12 noon on Friday December 23rd 2022 and reopens fully from Monday January 9th 2023.
Should you need supplies it would be best to get in to us as soon as possible, or we can courier or post them if enough notice is given.
As we all need a bit of a rest, there will be only 2 Open Clinic sessions over the break to help with emergencies:-
Thursday 29th December 2022 from 10am-11 am only
Thursday 5th January 2023 from 10am -11 am only
Pictures also today of some of the Christmas gloss at the clinic; of Sandra and Jeanine with 2 colleagues - Jackie from Nelson and Kristen from Auckland - who were trained to become Clinical Directors at Special Olympics Healthy Hearing screening in Hamilton last week. The team saw 740 athletes over a few days- we were helped by fantastic students from the Audiology programme at University of Auckland; and then finally the Waikato River looking very green while we stayed in Hamilton.

Weather alert -clinic will be opening late tomorrow.
Tomorrow Thursday Oct 6th 2022 the snow is forecast to fall to low levels and make travel difficult for staff and patients. We have decided to not open the clinic until 11am and there will be only one Open Clinic tomorrow - in the afternoon from 2pm-3pm.
We apologise for any inconvenience and hope you can stay inside in the warmth.
Here are the lovely purple tulips that are out now at the clinic and some of the last snow we had in Chch. Tomorrow could be much deeper it seems.
All the best from the team.

INTERESTING TIMES
Hope all are keeping just as well as you can as we deal with both normal flu and covid in the community. We ask for your understanding please if we have to postpone appointments (working both ways you and us) or when we cannot be as responsive as usual. Last week only 50% of the staff were in - due to family member illnesses primarily.
I know we are all tired and maybe a little scratchy feeling ...and that even chocolate is not helping as much as usual!
In the news department the supply chain remains patchy, Ashleigh is now on maternity leave and has safely delivered a dear wee girl, Nancy was back with us for 3 weeks but sadly has had a family emergency in London and returned there for now ...and our stalwart Helen is again to the rescue. Here are photos of Ashleigh's "au revoir" lunch and the beautiful sunrise this morning while I was looking for the Matariki stars!
Best wishes from us to you

ALMOST THERE for 2021- Best Wishes from us to you all.
Well – just one more week to go - and I am sorry to advise that the massive courier delays in/out of Auckland, with their CBD re-opening delivery catch-up, means that some hearing aids will not make it back on time for fittings this week. We sincerely apologise if you are affected - it is completely beyond our control as all the items have to come in via Auckland.
At least after all that rain and low cloud last week, we have some sun and heat about to descend.
Please note that the clinic closes at NOON this Friday 24th December and reopens fully from 9am on Monday January 10th 2022. If you need to stock up batteries or filters please do so as soon as possible and we can post or courier items if you order soon.
OPEN CLINICS for small repairs will operate 10-11am only on Weds through Friday December 29, 30 and 31st .
Limited hours operations occur in the week Weds through Friday January 5, 6 and 7th with the usual two open clinics at 10-11AM and 2-3PM. The clinic opens at 10am and closes at 3pm on those days.
We wish you and yours a safe and healthy Festive Season. Here is the annual Christmas breakfast photograph with from left back Geeth, Katie - our summer placement MAud student, Deb, Helen - who has been helping us out still, Ashleigh and Aynsley and front from left Sandra, Ruth, Brenda and Jeanine.
Also here is the low cloud about to smother Castle Rock …. and a wet spider’s web which truly reflects the last few days.
All the team looks forward to seeing you again in 2022.

Such A Year – Fingers Crossed 2022 behaves better.
We thank you all for your support this year and your understanding around the supply chain issues … plus the fact that we are still catching up from lockdown and have some recall delays. The restructured office team is settling down - with Geeth as the office manager, Brenda in accounts administration and we welcomed Deb into reception and general administration in October. Helen has been very kindly helping through the training and transition.
With the Covid 19 traffic light system in place we are not a vaccine mandated business - as we are a health service we are unable to deny access to patients. We will ask your vaccine status for our records, although you do not have to disclose this … but if unvaccinated we prefer you to make a 4pm appointment so that the test suites can be more deeply cleaned afterwards.
If any of you are concerned about mixing with others, we can do remote aid repairs as we did under the old Level 3 restrictions and we can send batteries out. Please contact the office for help with this.
We close at midday on Friday December 24th and re-open fully Monday January 10th 2022. There are limited appointments open in the week January 5th – 7th if you like to time your check-ups for your holiday break. Contact us soon if that is you.
Here are the admin team from left – Brenda, Deb and Geeth; our 2021 Christmas tree .. and finally a wee family of Paradise ducks that have been lovely to watch grow up safely in Opawa.

Ahhhh ---- it’s Level 2 again.
Thank you to all those who followed the rules and helped us get back to Level 2 restrictions. I am sure all locally owned, small business owners would join me there.
The longer you live, the more you realise just how weird humans can be. At the Level 3 coffee collect this morning, only 50% of those waiting wore masks as they should have. Do we business owners have to make sure our customers follow the recommendations … or is it an individual’s right to choose to mask or not? Legally, it is our job to police this … but I think it is the customer’s issue regarding compliance.
I can choose with my feet and not go to businesses who allow rule-breaking, I suppose, as the rule-breakers threaten me and the wider community with their non-compliance … but why should any majority be threatened by the selfish and non-compliant minority?
At Hearing Excellence we do expect those visiting the premises to follow “the rules” that apply to all.
From tomorrow we have appointments booked again and we can run the Open Clinics for small repairs (10-11a.m. and 2-3p.m.) but we request that you please contact us before coming to Open Clinic for now - as we need to stagger the arrival timing over the hour to keep to the distancing requirements.
Please sign in on the covid app if you can, or in your note book if you cannot access the app – and be aware that we also have to collect arrival data. Any accompanying folk who are not enrolled as our patient will need to give names and contact phone numbers -- or stay in the car. Sorry we cannot offer the wonderful reading supplies, nor any refreshments at Level 2.
You are always welcome to phone, email or TXT us if you need help with your hearing.
Hoping Level 1 is just over this rainbow.....
Best wishes
from Jeanine, Sandra, Geeth, Ruth, Ashleigh, Aynsley, Helen( for Nancy) and Brenda.

AN OVERDUE UPDATE
Hope you all are coping alright with the sudden lockdown. Those sunny days were amazing!
The clinic is unable to open for normal appointments or the open clinics at both Level 4 and Level 3 restrictions.
At Level 3 we can operate a remote service for some minor jobs and so please contact us from Wednesday if the need has arisen for batteries, filters or small repairs and we will try and sort some help for you. Please do not come to the clinic without pre-checking and arranging whether it is possible. We will have a very small number of staff on at Level 3, with no Ashburton or home visits possible either.
Speaking of staff - we have had an “interesting” and challenging year – Helen retired and her initial replacement was with us for 3 months before we recruited Mr Geeth Dharmasena to take on the new role of office manager/technical support to the audiology staff. We needed to enhance this role from purely administration as supply chain timing, quality, and goods arrival state has suddenly changed with most manufacturer earpiece production being off-shore now.
Geeth was born in Sri Lanka and has moved to NZ after living in the UK and carrying out a similar audiology admin and support role at Cambridge Hospital there. His wife is a Specialist at Chch Hospital and he has 2 teenage sons at high school, while his daughter remains at University in the UK. We hope you have the chance to meet him soon and we are teaching him all the kiwi phrases we take for granted like “feeling a wee bit crook”.
There was an office restructure earlier in the year after Helen’s retirement and we reshaped to three admin staff with Brenda, Nancy and Geeth. Unfortunately, since then Nancy has become stuck in the UK with a family bereavement and now another family member is in ill health - and the MIQ bed situation is difficult to negotiate to get her back. We have had some temporary help in the office while the next decisions re staffing have to be made.
The clinical staff of Sandra, Ruth, Ashleigh, Aynsley and Jeanine remains the same. Here for you are photos: - introducing Geeth; some spring symbols with the Leeston lambs Jeanine saw on the way back from Ashburton clinic pre-lockdown; and the lovely colours of some garden plots along Memorial Avenue.
Let’s hope we can all stay well …. and do get in touch if you need to.

Great News for coming to see us after Easter
What a hot couple of days for us all plus a wee earthquake there tonight. Hope you are all well?
Ferry Rd is two-way again - hurrah! It is now narrower and more colourful and has a permanent 30km speed limit. Just take a little time on your next visit to get used to looking for the cyclists in their green lane as you enter and exit the parking area.
Here is a picture of the new road decorations, some autumn colour from Clyde and an amazing double helix aloe vera in the garden.

Roadworks (again) at Ferry Rd
Just to alert you that CCC is building a special "trial" extra-flash cycleway on our stretch of Ferry Rd - this could make life very interesting with 2 schools and ARA Institute here also.
Currently (and til mid April they say) you cannot turn left off Barbadoes into Ferry Rd - it is best to continue in the left lane of Barbadoes, then turn left into Moorhouse, then left again into Fitzgerald and left again into Ferry. The speed limit is now 30KM and there are many road cones. On departure you must turn right out of our yard.
For some peace and calmness, and especially with the 10th anniversary of our life-changing quake coming up, here are some of Jeanine's 2021 Monarch caterpillars who are now rapidly turning themselves into their chrysalis stage.

FAREWELL to HELEN
Last Wednesday Helen signed off after spending 10 years at Hearing Excellence. While we will miss her very much, Carne is stepping up and learning the complicated office manager’s role very quickly.
It was great to be joined for lunch by the previously retired members of Helen’s team – many will remember Margie who came from the Bealey Ave clinic with Heather- who now lives in Queensland … and also Val and Patsy who were friendly faces at Ferry Rd only.
Here are pictures of the current admin team with Helen - from left Jude, Brenda, Helen, Carne and Nancy … and then the clinical team with Helen- from left Sandra, Aynsley, Ashleigh, Ruth, Helen and Jeanine.
We look forward to seeing you all when required.
