Inflammation and Cognitive Health. GUM DISEASE IS ANOTHER FACTOR.

Gum disease is not just a dental issue. Certain bacteria involved in periodontal disease including P. gingivalis have been studied for their potential role in cognitive decline.

These bacteria may affect the brain in two main ways:
• Inflammation: Chronic gum infection can raise inflammatory chemicals in the body which may contribute to blood vessel damage and brain inflammation over time.
• Bacterial toxins: Some oral bacteria produce toxins and enzymes that may enter the bloodstream and potentially impact tissues beyond the mouth.

Research has found associations between poor oral health, periodontal disease, and a higher risk of memory decline, though many factors contribute to brain health.

Here are some things we can do
• Brush and floss daily
• Treat bleeding gums early
• Have regular dental cleans
• Reduce sugar intake
• Support blood sugar balance
• Don’t smoke or v**e
• Prioritise sleep, exercise, and a nutrient rich diet

Healthy gums are part of healthy brain ageing. If you’ve noticed brain fog, poor concentration, memory changes, mental fatigue, or concerns around future cognitive decline, it may be time to look at underlying contributors such as chronic inflammation.

A comprehensive consultation may help identify contributing factors and practical next steps. This is a growing area of my practice so if you or someone you love are noticing changes then please get in touch.

Further to the post below on inflammation and cognitive decline. This is another reason we might experience inflammation. And yes it's one that naturopaths are always going on about.

Leaky gut or increased intestinal permeability is gaining attention as one possible driver of chronic inflammation in the body. When the gut lining becomes compromised unwanted particles such as bacterial toxins and partially digested food proteins may pass into circulation triggering immune activation. Over time, ongoing inflammation may affect many systems and this includes the brain.

Research into cognitive decline increasingly points to inflammation as a key contributing factor. Supporting gut health may therefore be an important piece of the puzzle when it comes to protecting memory, clarity, and long term brain function.

Key foundations include:
• Reducing processed foods and excess sugar
• Supporting beneficial gut bacteria
• Addressing food sensitivities where relevant
• Managing stress
• Improving sleep
• Repairing digestive function and nutrient absorption

Healthy brain function often starts with a healthier gut.

If you’d like support with gut health, inflammation, or anything to do with natural health feel free to get in touch.

Inflammation and Cognitive Decline: What You Should Know

Chronic inflammation is now recognised as a key contributor to cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Inflammation in the body doesn’t stay in one place, it can affect the brain, leading to:
* Increased oxidative stress
* Damage to brain cells
* Disruption of normal communication between neurons
* Accumulation of harmful proteins

Over time this creates an environment where the brain cannot function optimally.
Common (and often overlooked) sources of inflammation include:
* Poor dental health and gum disease
* Leaky gut and digestive dysfunction
* Chronic infections
* High processed food and sugar intake
* Ongoing stress and poor sleep

Many of these drivers are modifiable and often missed. If we address inflammation at its source this may help protect long term brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

Looking after the gut, oral health, and overall internal environment doesn't just help us now but it can help and support your brain for the future.

If you’re noticing changes in memory, focus, or overall health, it is definitely worth looking a little deeper into what’s driving inflammation in your body. The sooner you start the best chance you have of preventing further decline.

Supporting Cognitive Health Naturally

Cognitive decline doesn’t happen overnight. It often develops gradually with early signs such as memory lapses, brain fog, reduced focus, mood changes, or fatigue.

Many people are told this is just part of ageing but there are often underlying factors that can be supported.

In clinic I take a comprehensive approach to cognitive health looking at the multiple contributors to cognitive decline rather than a single cause.This may include assessing and supporting:
* Inflammation and immune activation
* Blood sugar balance and insulin resistance
* Nutrient status (including B vitamins and essential fatty acids)
* Gut health and absorption
* Detoxification pathways and toxic load
* Hormonal balance
* Circulation and oxygen delivery to the brain
* Stress, sleep, and nervous system regulation

Using a combination of naturopathy and BICOM bioresonance therapy the aim is to identify underlying stressors and support the body’s ability to rebalance, stop further decline and reverse changes where we can.

This is not a one-off treatment. Like most chronic conditions cognitive decline requires a series of sessions and ongoing support to see meaningful change.

Early intervention is ideal but it is never too late to begin supporting brain health.

If you or a loved one are experiencing changes in memory, focus, or cognitive function, feel free to get in touch to discuss whether this approach may be suitable. This is an area of special interest and I will be working more intensively in this.

Many women notice that weight gain becomes much easier during perimenopause even when diet and exercise haven't really changed.

Hormonal shifts during this time can influence metabolism, blood sugar balance, sleep and cravings. These changes can make weight management feel much harder than it used to.

Working with women in clinic I hear how frustrating this can be especially when they feel they are doing everything right but the weight still slowly creeps up or just won't budge! I really really get it (been there!)

There are a number of approaches that may help support the body through this transition. One therapy that I use is auricular (ear) programs through BICOM bioresonance which aim to support appetite regulation, cravings and metabolic balance.

For those using this approach a series of sessions alongside nutritional tracking and support is often recommended.

The body is designed to self regulate and heal but sometimes that process becomes disrupted. After using the BICOM for the past year I can see how important the first steps of therapy are and why it has to be addressed first.

Things like stress, infections, toxins, allergens, past trauma, and even electromagnetic load can interfere with normal communication pathways in the body. When this happens the nervous system and regulatory systems can struggle to switch off, repair, and restore balance.

This is where BICOM bioresonance can be a powerful support tool.

BICOM works by identifying energetic stressors and helping the body recognise and correct imbalances that may be interfering with its normal self regulation. By supporting these pathways we can help the body move out of a constant stress response and back into repair mode.

This approach can be used alongside naturopathic support, herbal medicine, and nutrition to help address underlying drivers of:
• Fatigue
• Sleep disruption
• Nervous system dysregulation
• Allergies and sensitivities
• Chronic inflammation
• Ongoing or unresolved health issues

BICOM is gentle, non-invasive, and suitable for both people and animals.

Have you ever wondered what your immune system looks like in real time?

This is a live blood sample showing a white blood cell surrounded by red blood cells. White blood cells are part of your immune system and they help defend the body and respond to inflammation, infection and stress.

Looking at the blood in this way a give us clues about what the body dealing with, such as inflammation, nutrient status, immune load and overall internal balance.

Contributing Factors in Cognitive Decline & Alzheimer’s.

Cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease are rarely caused by a single issue. They usually develop from a combination of stressors that affect brain cells, circulation, and communication over time.

Contributing factors can include:
• Reduced brain energy supply and insulin resistance
• Chronic inflammation and immune activation
• Oxidative stress and cellular ageing
• Vascular changes affecting blood flow to the brain
• Poor sleep and impaired brain waste clearance
• Hormonal and metabolic imbalance
• Nutrient insufficiencies (especially B vitamins, omega-3s, antioxidants)
• Gut–brain axis disruption and microbiome imbalance
• Chronic stress and nervous system overload
• Environmental burden, including mould toxins and heavy metals

These drivers increase the overall load on the brain reducing resilience and the ability to repair and regulate effectively. An approach that supports metabolism, circulation, inflammation balance, gut health, detox pathways, and nervous system regulation can play an important role in maintaining cognitive function.

This is an area of growing focus in my work and I’ll be sharing more on supportive strategies for brain health along side a brilliant new qualification to support this :)

If you're wondering how BICOM can help you...

BICOM works by reducing interference, not by targeting symptoms or treating a named condition. Allergies, toxic stressors, unresolved infections, and energetic blockages act like background noise in the body’s regulatory systems. When that noise is high the nervous system, immune response, hormonal signalling, and detox pathways are constantly distracted, reactive, or overloaded.

By identifying and reducing these interferences BICOM helps calm the system and restore clearer communication within the body.

This means the focus is bioregulatory rather than allopathic.

Instead of suppressing symptoms or trying to treat a named condition directly the aim is to support the body’s natural ability to self regulate and heal once obstacles are removed.

When regulation improves symptoms often reduce as a downstream effect not because they were directly treated, but because the body is finally able to function more efficiently and appropriately.

If you’re curious how this applies to your own health feel free to get in touch.
