If you’ve had multiple courses of oral steroids, you might have already passed the 1000mg lifetime threshold. That’s roughly four standard courses.

After that point, your possibility of long-term side effects becomes likely.

Oral steroids can be life-saving during serious asthma flare-ups, but too many can start to cause harm.

Learn more about how you can reduce your need for them.

Today is World Asthma Day. The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has chosen the theme “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL”. GINA emphasizes the need to ensure that people with asthma can access inhaled medications that are essential both for controlling the underlying disease and treating attacks.

Asthma attacks cause great distress for sufferers and their carers, and these ttacks may result in hospital admission and, in some cases, death. Inhaled corticosteroid-containing medications prevent asthma attacks by treating the underlying inflammation that causes asthma.

Doctors and allied health care professionals are called upon to ensure that every person with asthma is prescribed evidence-based, essential, inhaled corticosteroid-containing medication in addition to (or in combination with) reliever medication, to prevent the continuing avoidable morbidity and mortality from asthma.

Asthma Awareness Week!

Using a preventer puts you in control.

Preventers help calm your airways and reduce symptoms over time so you can stay well and breathe easier every day, not just by using your reliever during an asthma attack.
If you or someone you love has asthma, talk to a nurse or respiratory educator about if a preventer is right for you.

Exercise can help improve the way their lungs work and boost their confidence so they can better manage their condition
These are some ways you can help to make exercise a safe part of your child’s life:
• If your child has been prescribed a dose of reliever medicine to take before exercise, check that they use it.
• Make sure your child takes their preventer medicine every day. Watch your child use their inhaler to check they are taking it correctly.
• Make sure your child always carries their reliever inhaler or has one nearby.
• If there is an adult in charge, tell them about your child’s asthma action plan.

Remember, rest ethic is just as important as work ethic. Giving yourself permission to pause is essential for improving mood, managing burnout, and supporting your immune system.
