Understanding Ahimsa and how to practice it.

There is so much I could say about Ahimsa, but I don’t want to overload with info. So here is a brief outline of what Ahimsa is and how we can bring this practice of Yoga on to our mat and off the mat.

I would love to hear other ways you notice Ahimsa comes up for you below. 👇

Yama, a way to practice Yoga on and off the mat. A layer of exploration to evolve your practice. 💚

I am going to slowly dive deeper into each of the eight limbs of Yoga and share how you can practice in many different ways that you might not have considered. I realise I’ve never really shared much about the eight limbs before on here, and honestly I’ve always thought there is already plenty of info on our there, so why bother sharing?

However, just as in an in-person Yoga āsana class I teach who I see in front of me, and notice the needs of my students, it feels the same way on here right now.

It feels like now more than ever people want to know more. To deepen our understanding and connection to not only ourselves, but to those around us, and I’m excited to share.

As a Yoga teacher it can be easy to forget that most students may not know the intricacies of these practices that are so ingrained into Yoga, especially with what is shared in the west. My aim is to make these practices easy to digest so you can begin adding them to your exisiting practices.

Which of the five Yamas jumped out to you?

I will be exploring each of these five soon. 💚

rituals, routines,
from the outside,
radiate in 🌺

I’ve been in California for a month or so now, and I am still waiting for my work permit to be processed. I like to be as honest as possible on here, because I know it looks like a holiday 😂 but moving countries has come with its challenges.

I intentionally try to create a work life balance, mostly with more of the living.

I’m reflecting on how in society being busy often equates to success, to feelings of achievement, and that when you are forced to just be, it can feel weird when you haven’t chosen it. We are unfortunately programmed to ‘do’ and I’m not free from this thinking.

Work can (and should) offer a place to share passion, connect to community, to help others and grow, and these are the parts I am missing right now.

Anyway, in times like this my rituals and small daily routines really help to ground me, give me the space to notice these thoughts and reflect that everything’s actually all good.🤟

-my morning coffee
-joining local Yoga studios
-cycling around exploring
-voice notes to friends
-writing in my journal/notes app
-self practice at home
-reading
-wearing cute little outfits (don’t underestimate the power of a cute little outfit) 🌺
-finding free activities

That’s all 🫶

Are you ready for a different Yoga practice?

I recently put put up a poll asking what people wanted to see me share more of, one main thing was different ways to practice Yoga.

Most people come to Yoga for the physical benefits, that makes sense. In the west if you google Yoga classes in your area chances are only āsana (postural) based classes will appear, if you’re lucky there might be a meditation or a Prāṇāyāma class.

As your Yoga journey unfolds you will get curious, and that’s where the 8 limbs of Yoga come in.

The 8 limbs of Yoga offers layers of exploration. Āsana is just one, none are ‘better’ or ‘worse’ it’s only what resonates with you on that day.

Āsana can coexist with other practices, I love my āsana practice as a means of connection to self, a moving meditation as well as all the physical benefits.

As you evolve your practice will evolve, you aren’t abandoning your current practice you’re growing with it.

I look forward to sharing different ways you can practice Yoga. 🙏

When you slow it all down, you notice more (mainly flowers and plants for me).🌴 🌺

As we settle into our new adventure life moves slow. We don’t own a car yet, so we are waking or cycling everyday. It really allows you to notice the intimate details of an area. Interesting buildings, beautiful flowers, the local cat or the little lizards that run away as you walk past.

As someone who likes to be on the go, having the space to just be and go slow can feel challenging, but it is also exciting and fun.

It reminded me of how I used to love moving fast in my Yoga practice, it can be fun, and every now and again I do enjoy a fast flow, but the longer I’ve practiced I naturally moved towards slowness. Lingering in an āsana. Taking 10 breaths to get into a shape, staying for another 5.

So here’s your reminder to linger, go slow, stop and take a picture of those flowers, wander around aimlessly, go for a cycle at sunset and talk to your neighbours cat. 🌺

I’m here for the long form content 🙌🤟

I am so over trying to share info, knowledge and ideas in a 5 second reel. I want depth. So grab a cuppa, grab a pen and paper, and take a moment to answer these questions honestly.

One of the main things I get asked by students is how to start and commit to a self practice (if you don’t know what a self practice is check the second slide). I GET IT, it is hard, but I have done the hard work for you. I know what it takes to start and stick to a practice that will benefit you and honestly, change your life (and no I am not being dramatic😂).

I could have kept writing but I narrowed it down to 8 simple questions to ask yourself. These 8 answers will help you create your very own practice.

Now something to note, a self practice is not for everyone, and that’s ok! If you love going to studios, led classes, amazing! Keep doing you, but if you’ve started to get curious, or perhaps are just interested then have a read.

You might even think you want to start one, but then realise (maybe after answering these questions😅) that it’s not for you, and that’s ok too!

If you have any questions please let me know. 🫶

A love letter to svādhyāya,
notes from my this week 💌

svādhyāya, self study. observation of self, the more I observe the more I notice the impermanence of emotions, feelings, thoughts, that at first felt like everything. all in the space of a moment. how incredible. and then I’m back, to the breath, to the drishti. I embody the knowledge and wisdom passed onto me by my teachers, at least I try to. I sit with myself today, and I’ll try and do the same tomorrow. each time observing something new, or usually old. no one is leading me, I lead myself. but shouldn’t that always be the way? learning to listen just a little deeper. even when the noise is loud. how can five breaths feel like a lifetime? and then the next five feel fleeting? each āsana an opportunity, but not always for what you think, always leading me to that place of stillness. śavāsana.
