Have you heard of the bandhas?

I love when students tell me what they are interested in, once I teach students regularly I always ask them to let me know what they are curious about and to ask questions. My class is for my students, not me. The bandhas was a recent request, and it has really inspired me to dive into this topic in class.

I practice Ashtanga and the bandhas are an integral part of my practice, and sometimes I forget that other styles of Yoga and most classes don’t touch upon them and their benefits.

The Bandhas can feel allusive, they are internal, not external, so we can’t always see them. Often students are not sure they are ‘doing it right’, they can often be misunderstood as just ‘engage core’ but there is a lot more to it than that.

The Bandhas work with both the physical body and the energetic body, it is a subtle practice, and one that definitely takes time and experience.

Take a moment to read through my post and familiarise yourself with the bandhas. If you are interested in any of the research in the area please let me know and I will send you the journal articles.

Have you practiced them before? Let me know 👇

The power of simplicity and intention. 🌕

Its March, and honestly I dont know how we’re here already 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maybe the start of the year motivation has warn off, the New Year’s resolutions have faded out of sight and the new memberships have expired, and that’s ok.

I don’t know about you but my motivation has been up and down the last few weeks. Learning to be flexible, to simplify and to create a practice that works for me RIGHT NOW has really shone through (example..sound on 🔉 for slide four..sometimes you need to put your fav punk playlist on and just practice).

The thing is you don’t need a new year to make a change, to reset or refocus, but sometimes a new month can give you a gentle nudge in the direction you want to be in.

If you feel like you’ve let your Yoga practice slip try these two things this March:

1. Set simple and achievable goals - focus on setting smaller goals that work for your schedule e.g
-book into 1-2 classes a week at a local studio
-choose 1-2 days a week to practice from home
-follow 2 x 10-30minute online videos
-ask a friend to join you in a free trial
2. Return to your intention - this is your ‘why’, ask yourself these questions:
-what would you like to cultivate? e.g time for you, slowing down or being present, this is personal to you.
-what brings meaning to your practice?
-what keeps you coming back to your mat?
-what is important to you?

Choose one simple goal and write down your intention.

By choosing to simplify your practice and focusing on a personal intention you begin to create a strong connection between the physical and mental side of your practice. You take the pressure off and are able to stick to something that is important and meaningful to you.

On the days it feels hard to practice, revisit your intention.

Give it a try. 🤘

Niyama, a way to practice Yoga on and off the mat. A layer of exploration to evolve your practice. 💚

I am going to slowly dive deeper into each of the five Niyama.
As a full time Yoga teacher the majority of my teaching is āsana based, and that makes sense, it’s tangible, but it is just one small part of Yoga.

It feels like now more than ever we want to know more, we want to connect to ourselves and others.

As a Yoga teacher it can be easy to forget that most students may not know the intricacies of these practices that are so ingrained into Yoga, especially with what is shared in the west. My aim is to make these practices easy to digest so you can begin adding them to your exisiting practices.

Which of the five Niyama jumped out to you?
