A cracking Day 2 – Champion of the Bays at Midway Beach!

Nine clubs fielding their very best competitors:
Midway • Waikanae • Wainui • Waimarama • Papamoa • Ocean Beach Kiwi • Westshore • Waihi • Ōtaki

Huge thanks to every single person who supported on and off the sand all weekend , officials, volunteers, parents, coaches, and our amazing athletes. These events don’t happen without you!

But most of all they wouldn’t happen AT ALL in the way they do for so many years without the GOAT that is ❤️Sonia Keepa 💛 It’s Sonia’s last carnival for SLSNZ as she moves on to new challenges and leaves enormous boots to fill. Thank you Sonia for all the you have done for us at Midway the sport, the region and for being just a bloody fantastic human. 👏

Team racing kicks off tomorrow morning to round off an epic weekend. Let’s finish strong! 💪🌊

🌊 We’re Recruiting:

DIRECTOR OF LIFEGUARDING (Volunteer Role) 🌊

Do you love the beach and our community? We’re looking for a passionate and organised leader to take on the key volunteer role of Director of Lifeguarding and join the club committee.

This volunteer position is responsible for helping lead and support our lifeguarding operations to keep Midway beach safe over the summer patrol season.
The role includes:
• Co-ordinating lifeguard patrols and rosters
• Supporting Patrol Captains and lifeguard training and development
• Overseeing equipment and operational standards
• Helping build a strong, positive safety culture
• Working with the Club Committee to keep things running smoothly

We’re looking for someone who:
• Has a Surf Lifeguard Award (preferred, but not essential)
• Is a good communicator and team player
• Can organise people and resources
• Is passionate about giving back to the community
• Wants to help grow and support our lifeguards
• A willingness to support the club in a volunteer capacity

Support and guidance will be provided.
This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference, develop leadership skills, and be part of a proud, community-focused club.

TREASURER – (Volunteer Role) 💰
Midway Surf Lifesaving Club is looking for a Club Treasurer to join the committee.

This is an important volunteer role that helps keep the club running smoothly by overseeing finances and supporting good decision-making.

The role includes:
• Assisting to keep track of club income and expenses
• Managing accounts and online banking
• Preparing simple monthly financial reports
• Assisting with budgets and funding applications
• Working alongside a friendly and supportive committee

The ideal person will have:
• Good organisational and administration skills
• Basic accounting or bookkeeping experience
• Attention to detail and a trustworthy, professional approach
• Confidence with xero & spreadsheets
• A willingness to support the club in a volunteer capacity

You don’t need to be an accountant – just someone willing to help and give back to the Midway community. Full handover and ongoing support will be provided.

This is a great way to contribute to lifesaving in Gisborne and be part of a positive, community-focused club.

Positions come up for election at our Annual General Meeting in August/Sept. Early recruitment ensures a relaxed transition and handover to that point and into the start of next season.

Police are seeking assistance to locate Kymani, who is missing in Gisborne.

Kymani is 17 and was last seen on 1 February at Waikanae Beach, Awapuni near Midway Surfclub. Police and his family have concerns for his wellbeing.

He has long, curly brown hair and light facial hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt, blue jean shorts and a greenstone necklace when he went missing.

If you see Kymani, please call 111 and use the reference number 260203/1673. If you have information that may assist Police, please make a report via 105, clicking “Update Report”. Please use the same reference number.

MIDWAY THIS WEEKEND 🏖️🌊 | Eastern Region Junior Surf Carnival

Locals — we’ve got a big weekend on at Midway!

Juniors (aged 10-13) from across the Eastern Region have travelled the extra distance and are in town for the Eastern Region Junior Surf Carnival, and it’s a great chance to come down and support the kids who've trained hard all season, many for their first season!

✅ Racing starts from 9:00am both days
🍻 Members Lounge + Mana Moana Lounge will be open
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Bring the family, bring your crew , and soak up the action.

And a heads up… next weekend we host the Gizzy Senior Champs + Champion of the Bays Carnival, part of Shaw and Partners World Ocean Series. Come watch and support our senior lifeguards battle it out for the Ralph Morse Shield and see who takes out the Gizzy club champions🏆

Thanks to everyone who has worked hard to ensure this carnival can run, including the contractors who've worked so hard on behalf of GDC to get the beach cleaned and groomed! 🙌

TWILIGHT NIPPERS + LITTLE RIPPERS – THIS FRIDAY 30th Jan! 🌅

Weather is looking good for Friday night down at Midway — let’s get our Nippers and Little Rippers out there enjoying the beach.

🕠 5:30pm start – all ages
🕡 6:30pm–7:00pm – burgers + sausage sizzle available for purchase🍔🌭
Bring some cash or your eftpos card and grab a bbq dinner at the club.

Sunday mornings update: Nippers will resume on Sunday mornings, but not this Sunday as the Eastern Region Junior Carnival is on. For those who's kids aren't yet participating in carnivals, a great opportunity to see what its all about.

Also, keep an eye out about Waitangi Weekend — lots of coaches and families head away, so we’ll confirm closer to the time whether we’ll be running a session.

🛑 Midway is out of bounds for swimming this weekend so we are going to make most of the fine weather and head out to Makarori

🌊 Northern Makarori 10am start (everyone).

🌊 Make sure you bring your vests and a drink.

All Midway families currently in the Mount for the much anticipated ERCs this weekend are safe. Our thoughts are with everyone involved and impacted in this tragic event.

We’re deeply saddened by today’s major incident at Mount Maunganui, and our thoughts are with everyone affected.

Our lifeguards and SAR teams have been assisting emergency services, and Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service has served as an evacuation and support hub for the community. The club is now being evacuated for everyone's safety due to the risk of further slips.

Out of respect for those impacted and to keep the area clear while emergency operations are underway, the Eastern Region Championships have been cancelled this weekend. Thank you to everyone for your understanding.

We’re proud of our people across the motu who continue to support their communities throughout this extreme weather event. 💛
