Allergic rhinitis is very common and many people are complaining of hayfever symptoms at the moment.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that studies have found to be helpful in improving symptoms such as nasal congestion, itching and sneezing.

Definitely worth considering adding it to your smoothie.

After the success of my oyster mushroom growing (see photos) I'm trying microgreens. Mushrooms only took a few days. Apparently the microgreens will take a little longer ... somewhere between 7 and 10 days. Lockdown entertainment 🌱🌱🌱

Struggling for healthy lockdown breakfasts or lunches? Here's an idea for something simple, quick and healthy ... kumara toast. I was surprised to find that it actually cooks nicely in the toaster. Its great if you are trying to cut back on bread or gluten.

I've tried it with 🥑 avocado & pesto and with avocado & poached eggs 🍳. Both delicious!

I've created a little recipe book of kumara toast ideas for some more inspiration. If you give it a go, let me know what you think 😀

We tend to be harder on ourselves than others. Could you do with cultivating self-compassion while in lockdown?

While we remain in lockdown I like the simplicity and accessibility of a hot drink to represent spending time doing things you truly enjoy.

Take a moment to be truly aware of the pleasure of your morning coffee, chai, peppermint tea or whatever your favourite is.

“Cultivating self-compassion is at the root of what self-care is all about. So if you're looking to up your self-care game, don't forget to be kind to yourself and give yourself grace. At the end of the day, it may be the best thing you can do for yourself.” 🌱

Here are 6 ways that you can cultivate self-compassion
• Speak (and think!) kindly about yourself.
• Spend time doing things you truly enjoy.
• Forgive yourself for your mistakes.
• Strive to avoid judgments and assumptions.
• Take care of your mind and your body.
• Cultivate acceptance (even for your flaws).

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a lemon-scented herb that belongs to the mint family and grows like a w**d in the garden. It is a calming herb useful for anxiety, restlessness & insomnia as well as indigestion. I sometimes have it as a simple pleasant lemony tasting tea. Just grab a handful of leaves from the garden, immerse in boiling water, cover, and leave to infuse for 5-10 minutes. Make sure to cover it to stop the volatile oils escaping.

WORKING WITH ME:

I’m currently available on Thursday afternoons from 3.00pm to 7.00pm

Initial consultation (allow 1.5 hrs for this appointment)

This is an opportunity for you to share your symptoms and what aspects of your health you would like help with. I’ll listen and ask lots of questions to get a full picture. We will talk about your current state of health, your medical history, diet and lifestyle. From this information I will prepare a health plan for you. At Paua Clinic we take a client centred, individualised approach so your plan will take into account your unique experiences and circumstances.

Follow up consultation (allow up to 1 hr for this appointment)

One to two weeks later we will meet to talk through your plan. This will include health goals and recommendations based on your symptoms and any contributing factors. The goals are likely to include lifestyle, dietary, herbal medicine and/or nutritional supplement recommendations.

I’ll take a holistic approach to your health and work in partnership with you to identify what you need for your own wellness with care and attention to the big picture.

As a student practitioner I have the benefit of support from experienced naturopaths who will supervise my work.

Email me janine.sinclair@spcnmstudent.ac.nz to make an appointment or to organise a chat about how I can help you.
