Did you know a comb can be used during labor?! And no its not for your hair.

When gripped in your hands, a comb can help hit acupuncture points in your hands.

It also plays into the gate control pain theory. This theory states that the brain can only focus on a select number of sensations. Because the nerve endings are closer on your hands they reach your brain faster. Helping your body forget about the contractions.

For those who have asked how to hold it, having the comb hit at the base of the fingers (across the palm of your hand).

What does your placenta do?! 🩸👀

This incredible organ is one of my very favourite things about birth; not only because it’s absolutely amazing but also because no one ever seems to give it the credit it deserves! 👇🏼

🤩The placenta starts forming as soon as the fertilised egg implants in your uterus (usually 7-10 days after conception)
🤩Your placenta takes over the production of pregnancy hormones usually by the end of the first trimester (12 weeks)
🤩It grows in size throughout your pregnancy and is solely responsible for keeping your baby healthy, alive and nourished
🤩The placenta supplies oxygen to your baby, whilst removing carbon dioxide
🤩The placenta works to prevent your body from recognising your baby as foreign and attacking it
🤩During the third trimester, the placenta passes your antibodies to your baby giving a kick-start to their immune system
🤩At full term (after 37 weeks), approximately 600ml of your blood passes through the placenta every minute!
🤩Your placenta actually prepares your body for breastfeeding - as soon as it is delivered after birth, levels of oestrogen and progesterone drop significantly, allowing your body to produce greater volumes of colostrum and then breast milk
🤩Much of the health of a pregnancy can be seen when the placenta is examined after birth - for example, smokers may have a ‘gritty’, pale or small placenta
🤩In many cultures, placentas are hugely spiritual and there are many different rituals / traditions involved with the placenta after birth - e.g. burying it, sending it out to sea, eating it

If you’re up for it, I’d definitely recommend having a look at your placenta after birth, as it’s just incredible!

I waited and waited for you,
For nine whole months.
Since the beginning which felt so rough, Through the middle which felt like a teaser, To the end which felt so long.
My patience was tested in every way,
But you were worth the wait,
To me, you are perfect.

I worried and worried over you,
About everything that could go wrong.
Whether I could give you what you need,
Whether you would enter this world healthy,
Whether we would continue our journey after we met.
My worry for you was constant,
But you were worth every worry,
You are my everything.

I tossed and turned every night for you,
Looking for the comfort I craved.
Trying so hard to rest because I was tired,
Fighting insomnia like it was something I could control,
Waking to your movements because I wanted to check on you.
My darkness was more awake than asleep,
But you were worth every sleepless night, You are what I dreamed of.

I’ve stretched and stretched some more for you.
In every which way imaginable.
My body was pulled and scarred,
My mind was opened wider,
My heart was torn throughout.
My give knew no bounds,
But you were worth every stretch,
You are the growth worth celebrating.

I’ve pushed and pushed my body to get you here,
It’s not always been easy.
I endured physical intensity and exhaustion,
I tapped into every emotion possible,
I depleted most sources available.
I forgot just how testing it was,
But you were worth every push,
You are the result I’ll remember.

I’ve given everything and more to be with you,
But it was so worth it.
My darling,
You were so worth it.

It’s crazy that a woman’s body can expand to fit another life inside of her.
From a little bunch of cells, she grows an arm, a leg, eyes and with her own bones she makes bones and with her own blood she gives blood and with her own heart she makes another one beat...
Her organs push to the back, she carries 10 kilos inside of her minimum, and her skin stretches and expands to hold this precious amazing life.
A little person that will grow up. It’s crazy right??
All of that wonder... and then we tell women to pretend it never happened to their bodies? To “bounce” back?

What an absurd idea.

Covid Update:

Firstly we would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding as we have navigated the past few weeks!
Because we have moved to orange on the traffic light system, there are a couple of updates:

📍You may now have a support person attend your scan or acute assessment at Gore! YAY!!
📍RAT testing will still be required on admission in labour for you and your allocated support person
📍Unfortunately visiting is still restricted to one support person for labour and your postnatal stay, however they are able to leave for work etc and you may have another support person come in during that time. We are unable to accomodate siblings at this point.

This will be reviewed again in the short term and we will endevour to keep you updated 🙂
