Team Spotlight: Kay Teal, South Care Rest Home and Hospital

Some people leave lasting marks not because of titles, but through their heart, dedication, and quiet impact. One of those people is Kay Teal, who has been part of the South Care whānau for over two decades.

Kay first joined the home 25 years ago, back when it was known as Leith House. She began as a Caregiver and spent 22 years providing compassionate care to residents before transitioning to support roles in cleaning and laundry.

No matter the role, Kay’s commitment has never wavered. She continues to give her best each day, driven by her love for the residents and her deep sense of belonging to South Care. She often shares fond memories of the people she has cared for over the years and speaks with warmth about the community that has become her second family.

Kay has witnessed South Care’s transformation over time, from a bustling home of 85 residents filled with activities and laughter to the modern, evolving home it is today. Her stories reflect not only the history of the place but also the heart that’s carried it through the years.

From her manager, Danie van Niekerk:
“To us, Kay is much more than a colleague. She is a source of inspiration. The relaxed and natural way she interacts with everyone, residents and staff alike, always friendly, never complaining. If all of us could be like Kay, the world would be a better place.”

Thank you, Kay, for your many years of care, dedication, and kindness.

You are a living part of South Care’s story, and we’re honoured to have you as part of the Sound Care Group whānau.

🌟 Team Spotlight: Fae Astor, Roving Senior RN

Every great team has people who quietly make a big impact and for us, that’s Fae, our Roving Senior Registered Nurse.

Fae brings a wealth of clinical experience from her years of nursing background overseas, where she worked across maternal and child health, immunisation, adolescent health programs, and hospital-based care. She has led teams, coordinated community health initiatives, and supported safe childbirth and maternal care, skills that now strengthen the care we provide at Sound Care Group.

As a Roving Senior RN, Fae plays a unique role in our organisation. She provides vital clinical support across multiple homes, stepping in wherever she’s needed most.

Her adaptability, calm presence, and strong professional background make her a trusted colleague and mentor, as well as a reassuring presence for residents and whānau.

Through her quality of care, families gain greater trust and confidence in us, something she generously shares and upholds with every team she works alongside.

What we value most about Fae:
✔️ Depth of nursing knowledge and hands-on experience across many areas of care
✔️ Reliability and adaptability — bringing consistency wherever she is placed
✔️ Compassion and professionalism that reflect our Culture of Care values

Thank you, Fae, for the skill, dedication, and heart you bring to Sound Care every day. You truly make a difference, not only in the lives of our residents but also in the trust we build with families and the strength you share with our teams. 💙

🌟 Team Spotlight: Erla Astor, Cook at Steele Park Home

At Sound Care Group, we know that it takes dedication, consistency, and heart to create a true culture of care.

Today, we’re proud to celebrate someone who lives those values every day: Karen Erla Astor, Cook at Steele Park Home, who has been with us since March 2023.

In her time with Sound Care, Erla has shown an unwavering commitment to her role; never late, never absent, and always present in the kitchen to ensure our residents are well cared for through food.

She is more than a cook; she is the person who helps create comfort and joy at mealtimes, preparing meals that not only nourish but also bring a sense of home.

Erla’s background in food management, hospitality, and even running her own ice cream business in the Philippines has given her a strong foundation of skill and creativity. But what makes her truly special is not just her cooking, it’s her humbleness, cheerful spirit, and quiet strength. While she may sometimes be shy, her warmth shines through in the way she serves others, bringing positivity and kindness into her work every day.

What we value most about Erla:
✔️ Reliability — always present, always dependable
✔️ Skill — experienced in cooking, food safety, and special diets
✔️ Heart — her humbleness, cheerfulness, and care are felt in every meal she prepares

Thank you, Erla, for the dedication and heart you bring into the kitchen every day. Your meals, your presence, and your spirit make Steele Park a better place. 💙

Last Friday we came together for a Careers Day at Te Whare Manaaki o Tamahere, our soon-to-open Sound Care Group facility.

It was a beautiful day to connect, share stories, and welcome people into the heart of who we are — a whānau built on genuine care. 💙

From tours of our spaces, to meet-and-greets with our amazing team, and one-on-one interviews, the day was full of warmth, energy, and hope for the future.

A big thank you to our wonderful staff from Cambridge Life, Steele Park Home , and Athenree Life who came to support the day and share their experiences. 💙

To everyone who joined us — thank you. Your presence means so much to us. Well done to our applicants, and good luck — you will hear from us soon.

🌟 Team Spotlight: Rhea Arellano,
Recruitment Officer

At Sound Care Group, we know that our people are our greatest strength and today, we’re proud to celebrate one of them: Rhea Arellano, our Recruitment Officer.

Rhea joined Sound Care with over 20 years of experience in banking, customer service, and administration. She began with us in a role focused largely on administration, but through her dedication, adaptability, and sharp eye for process and quality, she quickly revealed a talent for recruitment.

At Sound Care, we believe in supporting our people to find their strengths and providing opportunities to develop them. With the organisation’s trust and guidance, Rhea’s role has evolved to leading our full recruitment cycle; from initial interviews to onboarding new team members.

Her ability to connect with candidates, manage processes with care and efficiency, and ensure the right people join our Sound Care whānau has made her a valued and trusted member of the team.

What we value about Rhea:
✔️ Dependability and integrity in every task she takes on
✔️ A “can-do” attitude that sees challenges as opportunities
✔️ Commitment to helping Sound Care attract the right people for the right roles

Rhea’s journey is a reflection of how, when people are supported and empowered, they can grow into roles that make a meaningful difference for themselves, for their colleagues, and for the residents we serve.

Thank you, Rhea, for the dedication, skill, and heart you bring to Sound Care every day. 💙
