Everyone who visits our massage table shares a unique story through their body. In the past two weeks, we've seen many people with issues like plantar fascia pain, lower rib discomfort, numbness in the fingers, shoulder and neck pain, frozen shoulder, chronic tension in one leg, heaviness throughout the body, migraines that affect vision, and burning pain in the lower back. We are very happy that our skilful massage could help with these and make people feel better: restorative and helpful. That made me think of self-care. We found many cases in which the problem was caused by tightness in the lower abdomen.

To prevent the lower abdomen from becoming too tight, focus on gentle movements, mindful breathing, and daily habits that support flexibility and relaxation. Here are some effective ways to care for your lower abdominal muscles:

* Practice deep abdominal breathing: Diaphragmatic breathing helps relax and lengthen the abdominal muscles.
* Stretch regularly: Incorporate gentle stretches like the cobra pose, bow pose, child’s pose, and gentle twists to keep the area supple.
* Strengthen core muscles evenly: Balance abdominal exercises with back and hip movements to avoid over-tightening one area.
* Stay hydrated: Muscles function better and are less likely to tense up when well-hydrated.
* Manage stress: High stress can lead to unconscious abdominal tension. Mindfulness, relaxation techniques, or yoga can help.
* Take breaks from sitting: Prolonged sitting can tighten the lower abdomen and hip flexors. Stand and move regularly throughout your day.
* Receive regular bodywork: Massage, myofascial release, or gentle abdominal work can help release chronic tension.

By combining these practices, you can help maintain a healthy, relaxed lower abdominal area and support your overall well-being.

Three Simple Exercises to Reset

You do not need a full hour. Even a handful of quiet moments can help you pause, listen inward, and rediscover your sense of self.

1. Setting Your Intention: Begin by finding stillness. Ask yourself, "What do I need today?" Maybe a word like 'peace' or 'resilience' comes to mind. Let this word gently guide your nervous system and soften the noise of daily worries.

2. Belly Breathing for Calm Stress often floats our breath up into the chest, tightening the neck and shoulders. Deep belly breathing gently reassures your mind that it is safe to let go.

• Place your hands on your lower belly.

• Inhale and feel the belly push your hands away.

• Exhale and feel the belly pull back toward the spine.

3. Opening the Ribs When your back feels stiff, your ribcage may be quietly holding tension, forcing your shoulders to work overtime.

• Place your hands on the sides of your ribs.

• Inhale so your ribs widen out into your hands.

• Let the ribs soften as you exhale.
