Asthma Waikato – who we are, what we do

Our Vision: Living free from asthma

Our Mission: To free people from asthma through expert education and advocacy to live a life full of possibilities

We explain:

· What asthma actually is
· What medicines there are and what they do
· What a spacer is
· What different devices there are
· What triggers are
· What other things might be impacting asthma

We explain the WHY of all these things because if people know the WHY they’re more likely to comply. We ensure people are on:
· The right medicine
· The right dose
· The right device

Our education ensures that they and their whānau know how to:
· Take it in the right way
· At the right time

We give people
· Our time
· Access to our expertise
· Robust follow up
· An open door policy for reaching out
· Holistic care
· A warm, welcoming environment for the whole whānau

As petrol prices climb you may want to change your appointment with us to a video call through ZOOM or FaceBook Messenger. Just let us know in advance of your appointment and we can make those changes. Looking forward to talking to you soon.

Not only do you get a FREE appointment with us, we have also saved you a FREE carpark right outside the front door. We are located at Chartwell Square in Hamilton, not at the hospital.

Getting out and about to Morrinsville Intermediate. They are keeping their asthma knowledge up to date which is great for the kids with asthma at school.

It's really disappointing when families do not show up for a booked appointment. Most of these referrals are coming from the hospital. We are a free service and are here to help, educate and support you and your family. We are worth the visit.

Cockroaches can be a trigger for asthmatics. I have found it helpful to spray a NO Cockroaches barrier spray round the outside base of my house, and across the front of the garage to try and limit these creatures coming in! You can purchase this spray can from the supermarket on your next food run. I also spray the ones that come inside with this too! Kills them DEAD!

Always keep an eye on the counter of your childs inhaler. Counters make it super easy to know when the device is empty, or nearly empty and you can arrange for a new one before it runs out.

When using a PREVENTER inhaler with NO counter like the orange Flixotide, it's important to know when it will be empty. Divide the total doses by the number of puffs your child is using each day. This will be the date you will run out and the inhaler will be empty. Note this date on your phone, the canister or somewhere helpful to remind you to organise another inhaler.

When we speak to parents, and they say the night dose of their child's preventer inhaler is missed, it is usually due to leaving it too late and their child is just not interested or they have fallen asleep. We know great asthma control is using that preventer inhaler every day, morning & night, no misses. Try bringing that night dose forward to when they are more compliant in the evening.
