A beautiful lotus birth journey, supported here at Waterford Birth Centre 🌸🌿

A lotus birth is when the placenta and umbilical cord remain attached to baby until the cord naturally separates in its own time, allowing for an unhurried transition into life and honouring the deep connection between pēpi and their whenua.

For this Kurdish whānau, choosing a lotus birth was a deeply intentional part of their pregnancy and birth experience. Although this practice is not commonly offered in their home country, mum voiced that she would like to have a lotus birth and her wish was supported every step of the way by both her LMC and our team - reflecting our commitment to informed choice and respectful, individualised care for every family who walks through our doors.

Throughout this journey, the placenta was lovingly cared for using salt, coconut oil, and fragrant herbs, wrapped carefully as it dried. These images share the gentle progression from birth through to the final moment when baby’s cord naturally separated.

At Waterford, we honour that every whānau’s path looks different. Our role is to provide evidence-based information, support cultural practices, and walk alongside families as they make the choices that feel right for them 👣💗

Introducing Nikita! 🌿

Nikita started with us as a support worker in 2022 and has recently stepped into her new role as one of our clinical assistants. If you’ve spent time at Waterford, chances are you’ve already experienced her calm, kind presence and the genuine care she brings to every whānau she meets.

Outside of work, Nikita loves baking (a good baked cheesecake is her specialty! 🍰), binge-watching Netflix, heading out fishing or to the beach with friends, and soaking up quality time with family. Her go-to foods? Anything with avocado 🥑 or a delicious pasta dish 🍝

What she loves most about Waterford is the special connections built with the families who stay here and being able to support them during such a meaningful season of life. She also shares how grateful she is to work alongside such an incredible team of wāhine who continue to support her learning and growth every day and for our manager, Tracey who provides opportunities to our staff and families every day 🦋

We feel so lucky to have you as part of the Waterford whānau, Nikita 🤍

Congratulations Ashleigh, James & Elliott on the arrival of baby Lucas 🥰

Ashleigh sent us this beautiful message after her stay with us last week!...

"I just wanted to say thank you for another wonderful stay following the birth of our son, Lucas. We were lucky enough to stay at Waterford after the births of both our daughter and our son, and both experiences were equally amazing.

Every member of the team was so kind, supportive, and helpful, and it truly made such a difference during those early days. The care was exceptional, and the food was incredible once again!

Thank you all for everything you do - we are so grateful."

Waitangi Day is a time to reflect on Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the values that shape the way we care for whānau here in Aotearoa 🌿

For midwives, it’s a reminder that birth is deeply connected to culture, whakapapa, and whānau. Every family deserves care that feels safe, heard, and honouring of who they are. At Waterford, we are committed to being a genuine Treaty partner and to providing care that is culturally safe, inclusive, and grounded in respect 🤍

If you’ve ever read Tracey’s promise displayed throughout our centre, you’ll recognise the heart behind who we are and why we do things the way we do (swipe to read!). These values guide our team each day as we continue listening, learning and growing together.

Have a safe and wonderful long weekend with your loved ones! ✨

At Waterford Birth Centre, whānau have the option of using pounamu (greenstone) to cut their baby’s umbilical cord as an alternative to scissors ✨

For some Māori families, this is a meaningful tradition. Whānau may bring their own special piece of pounamu, often carved by themselves or by a loved one, that has been shaped sharp enough to cut the cord. It can be a beautiful way to honour whakapapa, culture, and connection in those first sacred moments after birth. 🌿

We also have our own pounamu here at Waterford for families who would like to choose this option, even if they don’t already have one of their own. If this is something that feels special or meaningful to you, just let your midwife or our team know - we’re always happy to support what matters most to your whānau 🤍

Kia ora,

I’m Becca 👋 I’m one of the midwives here at Waterford Birth Centre, and the face behind our social media pages. I’ve been a midwife for 8 years, most of that time working as an LMC. I joined the team at Waterford 6 months ago when I returned from maternity leave after having my second baby.✨

What I love most about working at Waterford is being part of a beautiful team who all share the same goal; supporting parents to leave here feeling confident as they step into their new role. It’s such a privilege to walk alongside families in those first days, to witness the little milestones from feed to feed, and to be trusted during such an intimate and transformative time. Watching parents blossom into their new chapter is something I will never take for granted. 💕

Outside of work, you’ll usually find me with my husband and our two little ones on the farm, in the kitchen baking, or finding another creative outlet. A lot of my time also goes into , my online antenatal education business where I provide courses and resources to support families right across Aotearoa.

My favourite food? I love variety - but I especially love anything Asian-fusion 🥟🍜🥢. And if I could share one piece of advice with new parents, it would be this: There’s no one “right” way to parent - trust your instincts, and remember you are the best parent for your baby. 🌏
