Last week was world smoke free day, a little late on the mark, but we thought it very fitting to jump on board and detail some of the risk that smoking has on our exercise tolerance, overall health, and risk of cardiovascular disease, with some tips on behaviour change!

There are several factors that can increase our risk of developing cardiovascular or heart disease. Fortunately some of the most common ones are preventable or at least modifiable; meaning we can change them through lifestyle behaviours and habits.

Our blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels are directly linked with the behaviours, activities and choices we make each day (ie our exercise, eating, stress management and sleep quality). Cigarette smoking is also a behaviour or addiction that can significantly increase our risk of developing heart disease.

Our heart and lungs are best friends. They sit next to each other in our chest and a single puff on a cigarette will have a sudden and direct effect on our heart: increase our heart rate and blood pressure.

Long term cigarette smoking can also lead to the build up of plaque in our arteries, increase our risk of developing clots in our blood and ultimately increase strain on our heart muscle.

Va**ng and other forms of smoking can equally cause damage to the fragile walls of our lungs and cause extra workload on our cardiovascular system.

So this World Smoke Free Day, have a look at the “why" and “when" you are smoking. Is there a more helpful behaviour that you could be doing instead of reaching for a cigarette?

Changing a behaviour is hard so we recommend finding someone who can help keep you accountable and support you on your journey to cutting out the ci******es.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative, often disabling, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system.

With MS, the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibres and this disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and the body.

This interruption of communication signals can cause a variety of symptoms including fatigue, weakness, spasticity, balance issues, pain, numbness, mood changes and memory problems. MS symptoms may also lead to physical inactivity which is associated with the development of secondary diseases and comorbidity.

Currently there is no cure for MS. However an exercise programme that enhances cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, mobility and balance has been found to be an effective way to minimise functional losses in those with MS. A Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist is best equipped with the skills and knowledge to provide specific assessment and prescribe and oversee an exercise programme that fits the capabilities and personal goals of someone with MS.

Interested to learn more about MS treatment with a CEP? Feel free to find your local CEP or contact us and we can point you in the right direction!!

How does a Clinical Exercise Physiologist assist the people of New Zealand, and how do we fit into the holistic care approach of an individual with special considerations or chronic disease?

CEPs are part of a multidisciplinary team that help with rehabilitation and management of chronic disease, so if you have a medical diagnosis or had treatment for a chronic condition and exercise has been indicated as a beneficial therapy, a CEP will ensure safe and appropriate exercise is prescribed for you.

CEPs use specialised assessment and training to individualise your exercise to suit your level, fitness and needs and use evidence based practice to ensure you are getting the best exercise for you and your condition. Using exercise as a therapy/medicine, they can help with the long-term management of your condition, help manage your symptoms and improve treatment efficacy for your condition. CEPs can work alongside other health professionals like physiotherapists, nutritionists, doctors, nurse specialists, chiropractors, occupational therapists and massage therapists to help you manage and live with chronic disease ensuring good quality of life.
