Sun protection and vitamin D don’t have to be in conflict — it’s all about balance.
As Dr Juber explains, sunscreen is essential for preventing burns, premature ageing, and skin cancer, yet regular, proper use does not usually lead to vitamin D deficiency. Short, safe sun exposure and dietary sources are often enough to maintain healthy levels.
Not all sunscreens are created equal. Recent independent testing in New Zealand and Australia showed some products did not meet their labelled SPF claims. This is why choosing broad-spectrum, well-tested sunscreens — and checking the latest Consumer NZ data — is so important.
A balanced approach is key:
• Short, safe sun exposure a few times per week
• Daily broad-spectrum SPF 50+
• Dietary or supplemental vitamin D if needed
You can protect your skin from harmful UV rays while maintaining healthy vitamin D levels at the same time — thoughtful sun exposure, reliable sunscreen, and staying informed make all the difference.
