You may have heard about the Governmentโ€™s recent announcement to extend the maximum prescription period from 3 months to up to 12 months. This change is expected to begin on the 1st of February 2026. We want to ensure you have the right information about what this means for you.

Before a prescription can be issued for longer than 3 months your provider (GP/NP) will use their clinical judgement to assess your individual health needs. This includes considering your medical condition, how stable things are, and whether you might need more frequent follow-up or monitoring.

When you are due for your next review with your provider, simply book your review appointment as usual and when you see your provider ask whether a longer prescription periodโ€”such as 6 or 12 monthsโ€”might be safe and appropriate for you. They will talk this through with you during your review.

Please note that this change does not affect how your medication is dispensed. Pharmacies can only dispense a maximum of three months medication at a time. The $5.00 dispensing fee (if it applies to you) will only be charged when you present a new prescription and collect your first supply of medication.

In summary:
๐Ÿ’Š From the 1st of February 2026, your provider may be able to prescribe up to 12 months of medication.
๐Ÿ’Š A face-to-face review (at your scheduled time) is required before this change can be made. All patients on regular medications must be reviewed face-to-face at least annually to ensure their medications remain safe and effective.
๐Ÿ’Š Your provider will complete a clinical assessment to decide if a longer prescription is safe for you. Patients with health conditions or medications which require more frequent monitoring will still need to be reviewed regularly.
๐Ÿ’Š Pharmacies can only supply up to 3 months of medications at one time, even if you have a 6 or 12-month prescription. Remaining supplies can be collected as repeats from the pharmacy at appropriate intervals.
๐Ÿ’Š Controlled medicines (for example strong pain killers and stimulants for ADHD) will still be prescribed and dispensed on a monthly or 3-monthly basis, depending on clinical and legal requirements.
๐Ÿ’Š You will only pay the $5.00 pharmacy co-payment (if applicable) when you collect your first supply of medication. You will not need to pay it again for repeats from the same prescription.

If you have any questions or would like to book your next scheduled review, please contact our friendly admin team โ€“ admin@tmpp.co.nz . Weโ€™re always happy to support you.
