๐ŸŒฟ Next Weekโ€™s Yoga Focus: The Middle Burner โ€” Digestive System, Liver & Gallbladder ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Following on from our Upper Burner focus this week, next week weโ€™ll be working with the digestive system โ€” the Middle Burner. This is the space between the navel and diaphragm, home to the Stomach, Spleen, Liver and Gallbladder.
Expect plenty of gentle twists and grounding poses as we support digestion, detoxification, and emotional balance. Through mindful breath and movement, weโ€™ll stimulate this central area of transformation โ€” where nourishment becomes vitality.

In Chinese Medicine, the Upper Burner relates to the heart and lungs โ€” our centre of breath, love, and connection.

This week, weโ€™ll open the chest, soften the shoulders, and breathe deeply into this space to invite more ease, compassion, and vitality.

Both Yin Yoga and Gentle Yoga sessions will support this theme โ€” nurturing balance between stillness and movement, softness and strength.

I spent the weekend working outside on our section โ€” hands in the earth, heart full, body content. The highlight was planting our kลซmara tipu (slips), which we'd grown from mature tubers ๐ŸŒฑ The moon phases were perfect this weekend for root crops, and thereโ€™s something so grounding about aligning these simple acts with natureโ€™s rhythms.

After all that digging, lifting, and stretching, Iโ€™m feeling the upper body! ๐Ÿ˜… Which ties in beautifully with this weekโ€™s focus in yoga โ€” the shoulders, chest, and arms. Weโ€™ll explore how to open and strengthen this area, releasing the tension that so easily builds up from gardening, computer work, and life in general.

๐Ÿง โœจ Why More Psychiatrists Are Recommending Acupuncture โœจ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ

Have you heard that some psychiatrists are now referring patients for acupuncture? It might sound surprising, but emerging evidence and clinical experience are making a strong case. Hereโ€™s a breakdown โ€” backed by two recent articles I came across:

๐ŸŒฑ From theory to practice: Why this shift is happening

1.Growing clinical evidence for mental-health benefits
According to the NUHS piece, psychiatrists are beginning to see acupuncture as more than a complementary approach โ€” itโ€™s being integrated into mental health care for anxiety, depression, and related symptoms.

The Frontiers article reports on the Alberta Complementary Health Integration Project (ABCHIP), where over 5,400 acupuncture sessions among ~600 patients showed statistically significant improvements in depression, anxiety, sleep quality, pain, fatigue, and quality of life.

2.Safe and low side-effect profile
One of the big draws: acupuncture has very few negative side effects (when delivered by trained professionals).
This makes it especially attractive as a complementary tool alongside conventional treatments, or in cases where medications are poorly tolerated.

3.Speed of effects & multi-target impact
Many patients report feeling better immediately after a session (less pain, more relaxation) โ€” although how long the effects last depends on ongoing treatment.
One of its advantages is that it can treat multiple conditions in one go โ€” for instance, pain + depression. Given how often chronic pain and mood disorders overlap, this โ€œmultitaskingโ€ is clinically useful.

4.Real-world impact in vulnerable populations
The ABCHIP results are especially compelling โ€” in patients who completed at least 12 acupuncture sessions:
~75.5% reduction in pain severity
~78.4% drop in depression scores
~41.1% decline in anxiety
~53.1% improvement in sleep quality
Improvements also in fatigue, anger, and overall quality of life
Frontiers
These are real people in real conditions, not just lab settings.

๐Ÿ“ฃ A post worth sharing
If you or someone you know is dealing with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or sleep issues โ€” and especially if medications havenโ€™t been fully effective or have unwanted side effects โ€” acupuncture might deserve a look.

As always: itโ€™s important to consult with licensed practitioners (both psychiatric and acupuncture) and consider integrative care. But the momentum is building โ€” what used to be considered โ€œalternativeโ€ is increasingly being recommended by mental health professionals.
