Did you know neurological conditions affect 1 in 3 people worldwide?

From stroke and Parkinson’s to dementia and other brain-related conditions, these diagnoses touch many older people and families in our community.

Virtual Village East, HBH Group’s community service supporting older people to stay socially connected and active, is taking part in the Neurological Foundation’s Bowling for Brains fundraiser.

You can support this important cause by donating at reception or scanning the QR code in the image.

Thank you for supporting neurological research in New Zealand.

The year at Gulf Views has begun in the most delightful way — filled with laughter, colour, creativity, and connection. Residents have been rolling up their sleeves to bake delicious treats, expressing themselves through art therapy, and proudly celebrating Waitangi Day with heart and community spirit.

Adventure has also been on the agenda! From refreshing morning walks along the rotary track to cheerful bus trips, and a sumptuous lunch enjoyed at the park, every moment has been thoughtfully guided by their wonderful lifestyle coordinator, Wendy.

Together, these joyful experiences beautifully reflect our Eden Principle #5 — embracing variety and spontaneity in everyday life. It’s about creating a space where the unexpected can happen, where smiles appear out of nowhere, and where boredom simply doesn’t stand a chance.

Did you know? Arranging flowers is actually an ancient art. The Japanese art of arranging flowers or Ikebana dates back over 600 years and focuses on balance, simplicity, and harmony — not just beauty. Even more interesting, flowers don’t only brighten a room, they can actually brighten the mind. Studies show that having natural elements indoors can help improve focus and spark creativity. A simple vase of fresh blooms can quietly lift both a space and the people in it.

At HBH, this idea blossomed when Gladys from the Berwick community chose fresh flowers to place in the lounge for everyone to enjoy.

What may seem like a small task was actually a meaningful moment of choice as it reflects our Eden Principle #8: Empowering Decision-Making by moving away from top-down authority and placing important decisions into the hands of our Elders and those closest to them. Because sometimes, empowerment isn’t loud or grand. Sometimes, it blooms gently in the simple act of choosing flowers for all to share. 💐🌸

Today we celebrate Te Tiriti o Waitangi — honouring our shared history, our cultures, and the spirit of connection that unites us here in Aotearoa. 🌿

Across Howick Views, this celebration came to life in beautiful and meaningful ways as residents from the Seymour community gathered to create their own Māori poi (traditional ball on a cord), embracing tradition through creativity and connection.

In Berwick, residents transformed their lounge with thoughtful displays that reflect the meaning and values of Waitangi Day. And in Sale community, visitors were warmly welcomed by Maria, one of our Māori residents, sharing pūkana — a powerful expression passed down through generations.

These moments are more than just activities; they are expressions of identity, belonging, and purpose which reflect our Eden Principle #6 by offering meaningful experiences that nurture connection, wellbeing, and the human spirit.

Today, we celebrate not only Waitangi Day, but the stories, traditions, and people who make our community so special. 💚

Did you know? A gentle shoulder massage can invite the body into its natural “rest and relax” state. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system, it helps slow the heart rate, ease tension, and quiet the mind, often in just minutes. When we are stressed or deeply focused, the shoulders are usually the first place to tighten. That’s where the saying “carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders” comes from — and it’s physically true.

At HBH, Lorraine and other residents from the Sale community are enjoying a soothing shoulder massage provided by their lifestyle coordinator, Ana. These gentle sessions of comfort and calm are part of their relaxation activities, and it's also one of the safest massage areas we can give our residents.

This simple yet powerful practice perfectly reflects Eden Principle #7: Providing Holistic Care, where medical treatment serves — not leads — genuine human caring. Because at HBH, wellbeing isn’t only about health; it’s about ageing well and living fully.

In the spirit of building a vibrant and caring community under The Eden Principle #2, our residents from all communities at Howick Views came together to enjoy a sunny outdoor BBQ lunch, ice cream treats, and plenty of laughter. 🍦🍢

Some Berwick residents even took a refreshing plunge to cool off — making it a joyful day filled with connection, smiles, and summer fun! ☀️💦

Did you know? The very first muffins (especially in the UK) weren’t sweet treats at all! They started out savory, enjoyed with butter, cheese, or hearty meats. Savory muffins are famous for hiding vegetables (zucchini, spinach, carrots). Great for picky eaters or adults who “forget” to eat greens. Even better, with less sugar and more protein and healthy fats, savory muffins keep you feeling fuller for longer.

At HBH, Chen from the Seymour community teamed up with Charne, one of our lifestyle coordinators, to bake a batch of delicious savory muffins for Seymour. The best part? They used fresh chives grown right in their courtyard — planted and cared for by the residents themselves.

This beautifully aligns with our Eden Principle #5 — celebrating variety and spontaneity. From garden to oven, it doesn’t get more wholesome than that! 🌿🧁

This week's Did You Know Tuesday is a special one because the community garden of Stevenson Village had a wonderful boost, all thanks to the generosity of Botany, who donated brand-new raised garden beds. Built extra tall, the beds are safer, easier, and more comfortable for our elderly residents to use — making gardening something everyone can enjoy again.

At the heart of it all is our much-loved “head gardener,” Alan, who has poured countless hours into bringing the garden to life. And there’s more good news! A small group of volunteers, whom we connected with through the East Auckland Grapevine, has been helping transform another garden area on site. Over just two Sunday afternoons, they’ve cleared invasive weeds like moth plant, gorse, and privet. Their next hope is to help us plant new native species and continue restoring the area.

The before-and-after photos show just how much love and care can achieve. It’s a beautiful reminder of what community really means. 💚

Residents at Howick Views enjoyed their first bus trip of the year to Cornwall Park, taking in the beautiful scenery, fresh air, and the sight of sheep and cows along the way. 🚌

The journey itself was full of smiles and enjoyment. Anna, one of our dedicated lifestyle coordinators, made sure everyone was safe, comfortable, and treated to a delicious ice cream to make their day even more special. 🍦
