What an incredible day at the Lorneville Stock Yards for our annual Calves for Hospice auction!

We’re thrilled to share a photo of this year’s heaviest calf - winner of a $1000 House of Travel voucher generously donated to celebrate this amazing achievement.

A massive thank you to:
Jenny and Kate from Farm Source Otago/Southland, Winton Branch and Nicol from Carrfields for all their support in making this fundraiser run smoothly!

And of course, an enormous heartfelt thank you to every farmer, family, and business who raised and donated a calf this year. Your kindness and dedication help us continue providing compassionate care across Southland.

This year we had over 70 live and virtual calves donated - an absolutely outstanding result!

We are humbled to share the story behind Par for Purpose, an incredible charity Golf Competition created by Scott Whitaker - set to tee of on 13th Feb 2026.

2023 was an unimaginably difficult year for Scott and his whānau.
In January, Scott’s dad received a terminal cancer diagnosis and was given eight weeks to live. He passed away three weeks later on January 23rd, leaving the family heartbroken.

Just a few months later, in early April, Scott and his wife visited his mum and found her unwell. Within days, they learned she too had terminal cancer. She survived seven weeks before passing away.

Scott shares that both his mum and dad spent their final days under the care of Hospice Southland, and during that time, our team was able to support his parents and his entire family with the compassion, dignity, and aroha they deserved.
Scotts gratitude for that support is what inspired him to create Par for Purpose - his way of giving back and saying thank you for the care shown to his mum, dad, and wider family.

Join in the fun on Friday, 13th February!
Register a team, make a donation, or donate a prize - every contribution helps continue the work we do for our Southland community.

What an incredible day at the Southland Santa Parade over the weekend!

A huge thank you to the Drummond Motorcycle Club for proudly representing Hospice Southland. We absolutely loved being surrounded by the roar of the bikes and the energy they bring!

We were also joined by some of our amazing staff, along with their children and grandchildren, who helped make the day even more special. Seeing our Hospice whānau out in the community together truly embodies our motto: Living Every Moment!

We cant wait to do it again next year!

Last night we were absolutely overwhelmed and honoured to receive an incredible $45,000 from Cruise 4 Care.

To everyone who supported this event, those who cruised, donated, sponsored, bid at the auction, or worked tirelessly behind the scenes - thank you.

Every dollar raised goes directly into supporting patients and families across Southland and the Wakatipu Basin, ensuring free Specialist Palliative care, comfort, and dignity when it matters most.

We are deeply grateful to stand alongside such a generous community who supports us in our mission!

This week we say a very fond farewell to two much-loved members of our Hospice Southland whānau — Grant, our incredible Facilities Manager, and Heather, one of our dedicated North Road Shop Managers.

Grant has been the backbone behind so many of the things that keep Hospice running smoothly each day. His calm presence, practical know-how, and genuine care for our people and place have meant more than words can say.

Heather has brought warmth, passion, and heart to our Hospice Shop - North Road, always supporting our volunteers and creating a welcoming space for everyone who walks through the door. Her kindness and leadership have truly made a difference.

We wish you both all the very best as you step into the next stage of your journey. You will forever be part of the Hospice Southland family.

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas at our Day Programme!

Yesterday our Hospice Southland Day Programme team spent the afternoon creating festive Christmas crafts together. The room was full of colour, conversation, and that wonderful sense of connection that makes this time of year so special.

A huge thank you to our Day Programme staff and volunteers for organising these activities and bringing so much joy and creativity to those who attend each week.

And to everyone who came out to take part, cheer, ride, bid, donate, or simply show your support… thank you. Your generosity means so much, and it all adds up to an incredible contribution to Hospice Southland.

Every dollar raised stays local and helps us continue providing compassionate care and support to patients and families across our community.

Volunteer Spotlight - Meet our wonderful Alex!

It has been incredibly rewarding to watch Alex’s journey - starting as a valued member of our Yarrow St Shop volunteer team to now joining our Hospice Southland staff.

Working onsite at our front desk, Alex is often one of the first friendly faces our patients and visitors see. Her warm welcome and calm presence truly reflect the spirit of our organisation.

Seeing our younger volunteers grow, gain confidence, and take on new responsibilities is one of the greatest joys of our work. It’s a powerful reminder that when we invest in our volunteers, we strengthen the support and services we offer to patients and families - we’re also shaping the next generation of compassionate caregivers in our community.

If you’re interested in learning more about volunteering with us, please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator, Toni, at toni.eade@hospicesouthland.org.nz

We’d love to hear from you!

Some of our Hospice Southland Day Programme attendees had a wonderful evening last night at the NZ Army Band - Brass in Concert. The music and singing were absolutely superb, and we were treated with such kindness by everyone involved.

A special thank you to SSGT Nick Johnson, the Bandmaster, for arranging our complimentary tickets and taking the time to meet us after the concert — such a thoughtful gesture that made the night even more special!
