Pollination in progress!
Pollination is the act of transferring pollen grains from one flower to the next. Once pollination occurs, the fertilised flowers produce seeds, which enable the plant to reproduce and/or form fruit.

The more the flower is pollinated, the bigger the crop! Seventy out of the top 100 human food crops β€” which supply approx 90 percent of the world's nutrition β€” are pollinated by bees. Is there any better reason to look after these little ladies?

A great day keeping with the girls and bump 🐝🧑
Imagine a 5ft spacelady waddling around an apiary, checking brood boxes by parking up on a camping chair πŸ˜‚
I might be a lot slower at the moment but hey I can still get the job done so I’ll take that!πŸ‘Œ

First swarm of the season 🐝
Yesterday my Dad sent me a photo of a swarm of bees on a power pole, located just on the edge of the farm. So I packed up some gear and collected them. Was a really simple catch, just placed their new home at the very bottom of the power pole and they walked their way into it over a few hours. They could smell the frame of honey I put in the box so quick marched into it without any encouragement.
They are now tucked up in the garden on the family farm, Dads first bees (aka Pop’s Bees) πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ
I told him the next time he runs out of honey he will have to gather it from his own hive.... he wasn’t so sure on that idea 😝

When you ask if I have a favourite Queen - this would be her! She is in hive #2, my very first split I ever made from my class hive and has remained the same since! 🐝
Queens usually darken with age, hence why she is so dark and golden. Calm on the frame, her colony is hardworking and easy to handle, they are bountiful honey producers and she lays like there is no tomorrow πŸ‘‘
She is going into her third season and she is still going strong! I can tell that because of her pink/red dot marked on her back which identifies she was born Spring of 2017 for the 2017/18 Season.
Every year if you purchase your Queens from a breeder they will be marked with a new colour to identify the season they were born.
