Introducing the characters from my forthcoming book:
"The Lie of the Land".
The Professor.
“You’ve been coming up here for some months now, looks like we both appreciate this spot,” said the man, now beaming. “You must be Nash, June and Eddie’s youngest – from down near the valley?"
There was something markedly interesting about this old man. An intensity, a poise, a confidence, wit, and sense of guile that Nash found captivating.
It was difficult to work out quite how old he was. He was grey, clearly grey and old, and fascinating. Sporting the cravat of the well-to-do, he looked fragile and lithe and strong, all at the same time. He spoke with immensely considered phrasing, and a very clipped English South African accent – a man accustomed to being listened to, commanding and fascinating, but with patience and humour, and with something important to say.
He looked like books and art, perhaps a little dusty, and Nash imagined he smelled a little that way, too.
“Yes, yes I am,” proffered Nash, raising one eyebrow, unintentionally mirroring the man in front of him, “and you are?”
“Professor Du Toit, but please call me Andre,” smiled the man. Nash never would.
