The first of the lettuces were harvested yesterday by Dave, one of the Kauri Lodge residents who volunteered to water the seedlings every day while a timer was being sorted out.
Here he proudly presents some of the fresh produce to Kathy in the kitchen, who was making a salad with them for dinner last night. Well done, Dave — they grew so quickly! Must have been all the love and care you gave them.
Thank you again FNDC for supporting this project through Community Board Funding.

Oral Health Visit at Matauri Bay School 🦷✨

On Wednesday, Oral Health Promoters from Whangaroa Health Services and Te Whatu Ora had the pleasure of visiting Matauri Bay School to catch up with the tamariki and hear how their toothbrushing in schools programme is going.

Hine, the awesome dental practitioner, shared some exciting news — she’ll be finishing up a little earlier than planned because the tamariki have such great teeth! She explained how well the school’s toothbrushing programme is working and said it’s something to celebrate. 🎉

Toria from Te Whatu Ora Oral Health Promotion also joined us and ran a fun follow-up session with the tamariki. Everyone was shocked when she revealed that there are 10 teaspoons of sugar in just one energy drink! 😲

Ka pai, Matauri Bay School — keep up the great brushing and bright smiles! 😁✨

Celebration Morning Tea at Whangaroa Health Services Teaching Garden

A wonderful celebration morning tea was held on Wednesday with our amazing regular volunteers and those who were instrumental in the relocation and construction of the newest tunnel house at Whangaroa Health Services’ Teaching Garden.

One of the tunnel houses, currently holding the last of the winter crops, is soon to be cleared to make way for the next growing season. Plantings of strawberries and pumpkins have already begun in several of the raised beds, and earlier in the morning, the irrigation system was connected to allow the first tomato seedlings to be planted.

There are truly no words to express our gratitude and appreciation for everyone’s time, effort, and enthusiasm. Thank you to all who continue to make the Teaching Garden such a vibrant and inspiring place to grow and learn.

Dearest Gentle Residents and Staff,

A most heartfelt thank you to all who so graciously donated their finest hats for our Melbourne Cup affair. The day was a vision of elegance and charm — residents and staff alike dressed to impress.

A touch of excitement filled the air as everyone placed their wagers in the grand sweepstake, and we are delighted to announce that Lady Terina emerged victorious!

Until our next delightful gathering — may your tea be warm, your spirits high, and your hats ever so splendid.

Yours most affectionately

A small group gathered on Tuesday for the opening of The Sowing Machine at the Kaeo Playground, marking the start of another growing season.
The project, a joint effort between Healthy Families NZ and Whangaroa Health Services, provides a special space where tamariki can plant and care for seedlings. These can be taken home or donated to the Teaching Garden at Whangaroa Health Services which provides produce for Kauri Lodge with any surplus shared with the wider community.
After a few words of welcome from organisers Katharina and Sasja, one of the original founders Paul Condron shared a brief history of the initiative, which is now proudly entering its third year.

We dig, plant, chat, and share a delicious morning tea (plum cake and cheese scones, anyone? 😋).

Bite-sized Nutrition Tips - with Lavern

🌿 Healthy Fats = Brain Power 🧠

Not all fats are bad!
Fat is an essential macronutrient — NOT an enemy. 💪

Healthy fats help you:
⚡ Boost energy
🧠 Support brain & hormone function
❤️ Protect your heart
🌞 Absorb vitamins A, D, E & K

Best Sources of Healthy Fats:
1️⃣ Monounsaturated Fats
👉 Olive oil, avocados, nuts
💚 Supports heart health & lowers bad cholesterol
2️⃣ Polyunsaturated Fats (Omega-3s)
👉 Fatty fish (salmon, sardines), flaxseed, chia, walnuts
🧘‍♀️ Anti-inflammatory, supports brain & joint health
3️⃣ Natural Saturated Fats (in moderation)
👉 Coconut, dark chocolate, eggs
⚙️ Provides energy & hormone balance

🚫 Limit These:
❌ Processed oils
❌ Fried foods
❌ Trans fats
They can increase inflammation and lead to long-term health issues.

✨ The right fats fuel your body, protect your cells, and keep you strong from the inside out.
