Te Hiku Hauora

Te Hiku Hauora We are a Māori health provider, serving whānau, hapū, Iwi and our communities in Te Hiku o Te Ika. In 2003 it opened general practice services in Kaitaia.

The trust began in 1997 providing mobile nursing services in the Far North and has grown progressively over the years adding a comprehensive range of services including general practice, home support, health promotion, mental health and more specialized mobile nursing services. In 2000 it became the first Māori provider in the country accredited with Quality Health NZ, and in 2008 it became the first general practice in the Far North accredited with Cornerstone – despite being the newest entrant to general practice. As part of its
commitment to quality, the trust employs highly qualified staff and strongly supports
training at all levels of the organization. Another clinic opened in 2005 in
Coopers Beach and one purchased in 2008, and then a further practice in 2015. Associate Minister of Health, Hon Tariana Turia, opened our new purpose built practice in Coopers Beach in 2010. Our two clinics staff General Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Associates (who can prescribe), Practice Nurses, Healthcare Assistants and ancillary kaimahi.

HPV (human papillomavirus) is one of the most common viruses worldwide. For many, it causes no harm but it can lead to several preventable cancers.

✅ The HPV vaccine is the best protection. It’s safe, effective, and recommended for all genders.

💙 The vaccine is free for people aged 9–26. Most rangatahi are offered it at school in Year 7 or 8 the ideal time for long-lasting protection.

🏫 Missed it at school? You or your whānau can still catch up through your GP, pharmacy or local hauora provider. You can also book online via Book My Vaccine.

👫 HPV affects everyone. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer caused by HPV, but about a third of HPV-related cancers affect men.

🫶 HPV vaccination, alongside regular cervical screening, is the strongest protection against cervical cancer.

ℹ️ Want to know more or book? Visit Book My Vaccine or get in touch with your local health provider.

Today is World Hearing Day.

Hearing supports communication, learning and everyday connection. Early checks and protection can make a significant difference over time.

Te Hiku Hauora continues to support whānau with access to hearing services across our region.

We also acknowledge Peter, Suzanne and the team at Tamaki
Hearing Trust, who are back in Te Hiku this week providing hearing support. Thank you for your ongoing work in our communities.

Alcohol is often used to “relax,” but it places extra stress on the body.
Real rest comes from slowing down in ways that support your tinana and hinengaro.

Small swaps can make a big difference - a walk, a kōrero, music, or time to reset.

Support and resources are in the comments.
