Ngāti Kuri www.ngatikuri.iwi.nz Kia ora koutou. Nau mai haere mai.

Ngāti Kuri are descended from the original inhabitants, the founding peoples of the northernmost peninsula of Aotearoa, in Te Hiku o Te Ika. Today we have a strong core of kaumatua and kuia living in our rohe, and many of our whanau are all over Aotearoa and the world. In part this page represents an effort to virtually gather our whanau home and to provide a space were they and the world can see our strategic vision in action.

🛖🚨NEW PA KAINGA HOUSING PAGE 🚨🛖

“Whakaniko anō ai te whenua tapu, hei whenua ora. He Kāinga Pūmanawa, He Kāinga Pūmau”

Our Pā Kāinga is an iwi-led, whānau-driven housing programme, returning more whanau to our whenua and creating forever homes for our people. We have retired 61 hectares of land for iwi housing and we are building intergenerational kāinga that are mokopuna-centric, uplifted by kaumātua, and seeks to restore our connection to taiao, marae, reo and tikanga.

We have been working away at our programme for months now, and since our last post on here we have come along way from the expression of interest stage, where we have now:

- Held 7 different wānanga with interested whānau
- Started kaumātua builds (with some already lived in!)
- Made huge gains in our infrastructure programme, transforming all four sites across the rohe.

Now, we are ready to start sharing more of this mahi with you. If you are interested in Māori Housing and Pā Kāinga developments, want to know more about how to start, and want some real life project examples, with real life stories..... then follow along with our page below as we continue through this journey together, the whenua, the whare, and the whānau.

Nau mai ki te kāinga! All housing related posts will be on this new page: https://www.facebook.com/share/1E33DULnND/?mibextid=wwXIfre

He Pānui Tautoko mō te Rāhui

Ngāti Kurī wishes to express our full support for Te Rarawa Kaiwhare and all our whanaunga on the west coast of Ahipara in thier active protection and safeguarding of resources within their rohe.

We also want to acknowledge the intergenerational generosity that this rohe has extended for countless tangi, hui, and marae events for communities across the motu. We are greatful and have not forgotten this. Ka nui te mihi, ka nui te aroha!

It is only right that we honour and uphold the rāhui that has been placed by them in the best interest of everyone especially thier moana and taonga. We ask all our own whānau of Ngati Kuri to support and respect their wishes for a “no take” approach until further notice, to allow time for the natural restoration and regeneration of these precious taonga. Paua is the focus at present to protect among many other taonga. We will take advice and guidance from them on this.

As this weekend unfolds and moving forward, we ask those entering our rohe to take a measured, respectful approach. Like Ahipara, we too are experiencing high levels of take and a sense of entitlement that nature can no longer sustain. We are out of balance, and it is showing. We are signalling that change is inevitable whanau however we must do right by taiao. There will be times when we will have to find solutions together and make hard and uncomfortable choices as we move into times where continued pressure and numbers of people and catches increase in our rohe.

This is a time for unity, for kaitiakitanga, and for strengthening our collective responsibility to care for the environment and uphold our tikanga.
In our rohe:
-Please only take what you need.
-If you are using a permit, only those issued by Ngāti Kurī-nominated persons will be accepted.
- A reminder that harvesting limits have been set and agreed upon by our marae.

Finally, we want to thank our whānau who have been active in patrols and upholding kaitiakitanga. Your mahi is deeply appreciated.

Ngā mihi nui,
Ngāti Kurī
