Day Three: Honouring and celebrating the Te Niwha Journey - our final day at Tūrangawaewae & the sessions had a large focus on sharing a range of insights and learnings from the Te Niwha funded research.

There was a lot of focus on Te Ao Māori and innovation for better community health 🌱

We were able to see our awesome PHF Science partner's poster presentations and it was such a highlight to see the data and current results of the Carriage Study's research presented so thoroughly.

Our team presented on Community-Led Approaches to Carriage Surveillance of Infectious Diseases in Te Hiku o Te Ika, starting off with a Haka which drew in a crowd from the other session.

We were able to share the journey of our field research and success of our ongoing Carriage Study which highlighted the importance of community led research.

What a privilege it was to attend such an insightful and important kaupapa & ngā mihi nui Te Niwha, Waikato Tainui & Tūrangawaewae for hosting 🔬🧫🧬

Day Two: Sir Ashley Bloomfield facilitated the morning discussions around pandemic preparedness and we heard from leading scholars about their current infectious diseases surveillance in Aotearoa.

The day was split into 4 sessions with two rooms running 15 minute talks on various study presentations where we were able to pick and choose which talks to go and listen to. From Antibiotic use in Aotearoa to Developing a Kaupapa Māori framework for infectious disease surveillance, we were surrounded by such insightful and important scientific research.

Our team managed to have a quick kōrero with Sir Ashley Bloomfield at the end of the day. 📸🧪🩺

Our Waharoa ki te Toi team recently traveled to the National Infectious Diseases & Pandemic Preparedness Summit 2025 held at Tūrangawaewae.

Day One: The researchers and presenters from across Aotearoa congregated outside of Tūrangawaewae for the Pōwhiri. We were warmly welcomed onto the Marae with Bishop Kitohi Pikaahu as our Kaikōrero representing the Te Niwha cohort.

Muriwhenua representation was large for day one of the information talks with Dr Te Anga Nathan leading off the afternoon session. Our team supported our Muriwhenua whanau Maihi Makiha who spoke on Mātauranga and Science in action 🧬💥

Kia ora e te iwi! 🌿

A huge mihi to all the whānau from Te Hiku o te Ika who have taken part in our study over the past few months. Your support and willingness to be involved has made this kaupapa such a success! 🙌🏽

We’ve now completed the swabbing phase and are working closely with our wider infectious disease research team to explore the data carefully. Together, we’re building insights that will help strengthen health and disease resilience for our people in Te Hiku and for Māori across Aotearoa.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa — we couldn’t have done it without you and look forward to sharing the final story with our people in the coming months! 💛

Swab Ready & Study Strong! 🧪💪

On May 1st, the MOKO Foundation team got hands-on with expert swab training thanks to our amazing friend and local nurse, Giddy, from Te Whare Oranga O Muriwhenua. Her skills, knowledge, and iMoko experience gave us the confidence to swab like pros! 👩‍⚕️✨

We were also privileged to be joined by Lead Scientist Una Ren from ESR, who’ll be testing the samples from our Te Hiku whānau. Ngā mihi to both Giddy and Una for empowering our team with the tools and confidence to kick off the next phase of our Carriage Study.

We’re trained, ready, and excited — now we need YOU!

Kia ora koutou!

We've been mentioning the Pneumococcal and Meningococcal Carriage Study quite a lot. And most people know what a study is.

But what is 'carriage'? And why does knowing more about carriage matter?

Well...

Infectious disease carriage is when people have the bugs in their body, can oftentimes not have symptoms, but they can spread it around to their whānau and hapori members without knowing. Sometimes these whānau or hapori members are more vulnerable and can get sick. Māori tāngata are one of the groups in Aotearoa that are more likely to be hospitalized for these illnesses.

Why does knowing more about carriage matter?

Knowing more about who is a 'carrier', whether they're getting sick, and who they're spreading it to (and how) can help decision makers make better strategic decisions to help keep more people safe from these infectious diseases.

We're focused on ensuring the study is successful for this reason. To keep more whānau safe from these infectious diseases.

Are you living in Te Hiku and are you interested in joining our study? Have any pātai? Whakapā mai - get in touch via email: elizabeth@themokofoundation.com or DM us. We'd love to hear from you!

*Kaupapa Māori biomedical research has many layers*

At its core, it’s shaped by the values and needs of the Te Hiku community we’re working alongside. But it also takes skill and knowledge to do this work well. Without both of those things in balance, we won’t get the kind of research outcomes our people deserve.

This week, we headed to Te Whanganui-a-Tara to help make that happen.

We have a responsibility to our Te Hiku whānau to:

- Be open about what we’re doing and why
- Make sure they know where their swabs and information are going
- Have strong systems in place to keep their data and samples safe
- Communicate all of this clearly and honestly

We went down with the goal of better understanding what happens to the swabs once they leave our hands—where they go, who’s working with them, and how they’ll be treated. We want to be confident they’ll be looked after properly—with skill, care, and respect.

After meeting with ESR, we feel reassured. The Carriage Study we’re about to begin has the mana of our Te Hiku o Te Ika whānau at its centre. We’re proud to be part of something that not only holds true to our values but also contributes to both academic and community knowledge.

Have any questions about our rangahau or mahi? We're keen to kōrero. Drop any pātai below 🙂
