For those new to Thirona, she's a very experienced physio (more that 17 years in the game 👍) - with a special interest in headaches, concussion & pain management.

Breathing is so key... and something we don't all do as well as we should.

Breathing is so key... and something we don't all do as well as we should.

The breathing pattern described—two quick inhales followed by a single extended exhale—is known as "cyclic sighing" and has been supported by scientific research for its calming effects.

A study led by Dr. David Spiegel and Dr. Andrew Huberman at Stanford University (2023) investigated the effects of different breathwork methods, including cyclic sighing, on stress and mood.

The research found that just five minutes of daily cyclic sighing significantly improved mood and reduced anxiety more effectively than mindfulness meditation.

The technique works by increasing oxygen intake and enhancing carbon dioxide release, which directly influences the parasympathetic nervous system—the part of the nervous system responsible for rest and relaxation.

Unlike other methods that require lengthy training or pharmaceutical interventions, this technique provides a rapid, accessible way to reduce anxiety and elevate emotional well-being.

The study’s findings give credibility to claims that this simple breathing technique can help manage stress in daily life.

Quick question for all the mamas and soon to be mamas out there - we're thinking of starting a Mums 'n Bubs class for pre & post natal mamas & their little people on Wednesdays @ Bodyworks from 10.15am with the amazing Carolina.
Would there be any interest in that?
Feedback much appreciated. :)

Don't have time to read Osteoporosis New Zealand's whole report? Here are the key facts:

-Over 22,000 fragility fractures occur annually among Kiwis aged 50+, costing $360M and using 300,000 hospital bed days—equal to a 525-bed hospital running year-round.
-Without action, this will double by 2035.
-The roadmap sets 7 national objectives: improve hip fracture care, expand Fracture Liaison Services, promote prevention across all ages, enhance maternal/youth nutrition, embed research, educate the public (Know Your Bones™), and address inequities.
-Goal: Reduce fractures by 30–40% and falls by up to 30% through a life-course approach and collaborative action.

We're doing our bit to support with our weekly classes that focuses on bone strength & joint stability. Call us on 09 4074288 to find out more.
