When cleaning up areas after Cyclone Gabrielle, make sure you're careful around floodwaters and silt. Always assume it’s contaminated with farm run-off, chemicals, or sewage, and may be harmful to your health.

To keep healthy and safe:

◼️ Check what’s in the area before you dig or move silt – look for any industrial buildings nearby and search the area for debris

◼️ If you see or smell anything suspicious seek advice before doing any work

◼️ Where possible use machinery to do the job and keep all doors and windows closed while digging

◼️ If you need to move silt by hand, cover yourself up as much as possible and use personal protective equipment like gloves, masks, and safety glasses

◼️ When you’re done remove and dispose of any PPE and immediately wash your hands, arms and face with soapy water

◼️ Make sure you wash your footwear and clothing but keep it separate from your regular laundry.
