What to pack, what not to pack- from a Midwife💛

You don’t need everything—just the things that help you feel safe, comfortable, and supported in those first powerful hours/days.

✨ For you: comfy clothes, toiletries, lip balm (trust me), phone charger, maternity pads, breast pads, something warm
✨ For baby: a going-home outfit, onesies, nappies, blanket, car seat ready for home
✨ For labour: birth preferences, snacks, water bottle, hair ties, music, anything that helps you feel calm
✨ For feeding: bras/tops you can easily open, ni**le cream if you’re planning to breastfeed

My midwife tip?
Pack light—but pack intentionally. Comfort, familiarity, and feeling cared for matter more than having every gadget. Most hospitals and birth centers have the essentials!

You’ve got this. Your body knows what to do 🤍

Clogged duct vs Mastitis — what’s the difference?

Clogged (blocked) duct
• Localised lump or firmness in the breast
• Tender or sore in one spot
• Skin usually looks normal
• No fever or flu-like symptoms
• Often improves with frequent feeding and gentle care

Mastitis
• Wedge-shaped redness or swelling
• Increasing pain and warmth
• Fever, chills, body aches, flu-like feelings
• Can feel suddenly unwell
• Needs prompt treatment — often requires antibiotics

Important to know:
A clogged duct can turn into mastitis if inflammation or infection develops — early support matters. As always, contact your midwife, they will be able to help but what you can implement is regular ibuprofen and paracetamol, Ice ice ice, massage in shower, feed as usual off the inflamed side and stay hydrated.

If you’re breastfeeding:
Listen to your body, rest when you can, and seek help early if symptoms worsen or you feel unwell.

1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss — yet so many suffer in silence.
Pregnancy loss deserves acknowledgment, compassion, and ongoing support.
Whether your loss was recent or years ago, your feelings still matter.

Every pregnancy deserves support.
The joyful ones. The complicated ones. The quiet, anxious, unexpected ones.
No one should have to navigate pregnancy alone - This is your reminder you can always reach out. To myself, to family, to friends, no one should have to navigate this unknown journey alone💛

Did you know that eating 6 dates a day from 36 weeks has research-backed benefits for labour?

Several studies have shown that women who ate 6 dates daily in late pregnancy experienced:

✨ Higher Bishop scores (better cervical readiness)
✨ More spontaneous labours
✨ Less need for induction or augmentation
✨ Shorter early (latent) labour
✨ Greater cervical dilation on admission

Dates don’t start labour, but they can help your body be more prepared for when it happens. How cool!

Nutrient-dense, delicious, and totally natural… a sweet little evidence-based boost for the final weeks 🌸 Some mama's like to add them to their smoothies, while others like to drizzle nut-butter and dark chocolate on them, while others just eat them as is!

Always chat with your midwife if you have gestational diabetes or specific dietary needs or are wanting more information on this!

Surviving the first weeks postpartum isn’t about doing more, it’s about slowing down, softening expectations, and giving yourself permission to heal.
Your body is recovering, your hormones are shifting, and you’re learning your baby one cuddle, cry & feed at a time.

Here are the things that truly matter in those first weeks:
✨ Rest
✨ Nourishing food
✨ Accepting help or asking for it
✨ Skin-to-skin
✨ Protecting your mental health
✨ Keeping things simple
✨ Celebrating the little wins

If these days feel tender, messy, emotional, or overwhelming, you’re not failing. You’re normal. You’re healing. You’re doing an incredible job.

You don’t have to do this alone mama✨

🎶 Music in Labour & Birth 🎶

Did you know that music can be a powerful tool during labour and birth? Whether it’s soft piano, rainfall, worship or your favourite feel-good playlist, the right soundtrack can:

-Lower stress
-Help regulate breathing
-Distract from pain
-Support rhythm during contractions
-Create a calm, safe space for you and baby

Everyone’s vibe is different—some prefer ambient sounds, others want Beyoncé on repeat. The key? Choose what makes YOU feel empowered, safe, and grounded, I’ve seen the power of a good playlist work magic in the labour space so I curated my favourite, calming songs mixes with some classics you can use or grab Inspo from for you own labour/birth and if you’re a midwife or student, having this playlist to offer mamas in labour is always handy!♥️

Let’s talk Fetal Monitoring in Labour

Doppler (Intermittent listening)
✔️ Simple, non-invasive, lets you move freely
⚠️ Only “snapshots,” may miss subtle changes
CTG (Continuous trace)
✔️ Real-time picture of baby + contractions
⚠️ Can limit movement + increase interventions
Fetal Scalp Electrode (FSE)
✔️ Most accurate, beat-to-beat heart rate
⚠️ Invasive, needs waters broken, small infection risk

Low-risk → Doppler
High-risk/concerns → CTG
Poor trace/need accuracy → FSE

Every birth is unique—your team will recommend and inform you on the safest option for you + baby👶🏻
