As you are all probably aware by now, there is currently a Measles outbreak in NZ. So if you were born in 1969 or later than, and aren't aware of your vaccination status regarding the MMR vaccine, give the pharmacy a call on 07 572 0505 and we can get your vaccination sorted.
This vaccine however is not suitable for people who are severely immunocompromised.

SHINGLES VACCINE:

Hi folks, a reminder that the shingles vaccine is funded only at the age of 65 years. So if you haven't had yours yet, please book in for one now before you miss the subsidy period.

Over the last few months, I've also gotten queries from patients who either missed the subsidy timeframe for the Shingrix branded vaccine or those who have had the old Zostavax vaccine (which was the live one available before Sept. 2022).

We can still supply the Shingrix vaccine for these people, however it won't be funded. I have already given the Shingrix vaccine for a few patients who have already had the Zostavax one, as the immunity for Zostavax only lasts 3-5 years, while the Shingrix vaccine is more effective and provides longer cover.

Some patients have even asked me about the recent news reports they have seen about the possibility of the shingles vaccine reducing the risk of dementia ':-)
While I feel like there needs to be more studies done around this to draw any definitive conclusions, the study in question was conducted on a large scale and showed about a 27% reduction in the likelihood of getting dementia after shingles vaccination. The claim was that getting shingles in of itself may increase the incidence of getting dementia.
