In a study of over 200 women, 56% of women who had postpartum pelvic floor problems said that it had a negative impact on how they adjusted to being a mother, how they bonded with their baby and their overall wellbeing.
A few other major themes emerged including fear/upset of symptoms being made worse by holding/carrying their baby, upset that symptoms made them less present with their child and even feelings of resentment.
It may seem obvious that birth injuries can lead to negative wellbeing, especially to those that have been through it, and something I see in clinic all the time. BUT what is important about this research is it is more proof to the powers that be about the importance of pelvic health care!
We need a much more holistic model of care for our postpartum women. To look after their physical, mental, social, emotional health. It cannot be separated out.
So grateful for all the research that is happening out there, hopefully we move closer towards the healthcare system mothers deserve π€
