The Dance.

Surfing and being in the ocean is such a gift, and brings so much joy to many around the world. For some just being in the sea and catching a wave is enough to satisfy the soul. For others, there is a desire to progress the art and skill of surfing to a higher level.

To me, surfing feels like a dance with the forces of nature. Ranginui (sky father) produces the wind and force that Papatuanuku (earth mother) and Tangaroa (god of the sea) accept and holds that force in the ocean producing stormy seas and then the incredible lines of swell that we are blessed to ride. Watching the best surfers ride a wave is like watching them elegantly dance with those different forces of nature and perfectly match them with power, grace and flow.

I have felt moments of this in my surfing (and it feels amazing) but often it feels like I’m misstepping, mistiming or just stepping on mother natures toes. In the last year I have been part of the online Academy and have felt my surfing improve so much through the tutorials and tips which focus on how to move your body and board in harmony with the wave.

Matt is starting a “4 week Accelerator course” on June 1st for all academy members. During the webinar series, Matt will dive deep into the key topics he has found to be most effective in improving overall surfing performance.

Check it out and hope to see you there, and out there 🤙🏼

Thoughts are going out to those having their life’s and homes affected by the floods. It is clear we are living through turbulent times in both an environmental, political and cultural sense. Businesses are just recovering from Covid times, and to be struck another blow must be devestatonf. While some do have more shelter from this global turbulence, we are all in this together. It becomes easy to feel isolated and lost in an world that seems to have lost its way as well. While I can’t share any tips to correct any of the complex issues out there, I can share what I have found helpful to stay grounded and have perspective in my own recent health struggles.

I came across Living Myth podcast when i was looking for something for the kids. While I had always thought of myths as old stories, I was captivated by how Meade relates the ancients myths to modern struggles. They almost seem like a sort of map to navigate the internal and external seas that have become stormy, and clues how to dive below into the depths to find answers as well as our own gifts to bring back to the surface to help the world.

This probably sounds a bit abstract and maybe not the right time if your house or full of water, but have a listen. Every episode i feel calmer, more grounded and more optimistic about where things are heading. Link is in bio

And hopefully we get some good waves out of these storms 🤙🏼

Papatūānuku and Ranginui

Many cultures around the world share a similar creation story that involves a sky father and an earth mother. How different cultures around the world, with no communication, came up with similar creation stories intrigues me and got me wondering about what qualities of these elements inspired these myths and stories.

The sky father elements of wind, sunshine and rain are all quite direct forces moving (more or less) in a straight line. These forces mean action, that “let’s get this done” male quality. Then there is gravity which is a powerful direct force, but is a result of the attraction of towards Papatuanuku (Mother Earth).

To me, The earth elements can have a roundness to them - the rolling hills and swells, the curves of plants and coastlines. Mother Earth can also hold the energy that sky father sends down and transmute it into the beauty of life on earth as well as harnessing the energy of the wind into the rolling swells that we surf.

It’s important to recognize that nothing (including us) is either absolutely masculine or feminine but contains elements of both in a certain balance- similar to the concept of Yin and Yang. How these different energies relate to each other in our world and inside ourselves was the inspiration for this painting- which was a birthday gift for Julia.

It’s been about 20 years since I painted. I really enjoyed the creative process and stoked how it turned out 🤙🏼🤙🏼

PhiloSurfy.

I think every surfer has some takes philosophical lessons from surfing that can apply to life. The riding of a wave, the paddle out, the changing conditions etc. This is part of why surfing becomes a way of life, not just a sport.

Adapting your surfing to what the wave does has been a big lesson for me personally the last 2 years, but I think also for the world with the massive changes in the wave of life that Covid has caused

2 years ago the wave ahead looked like it was walling up nicely and I was metaphorically doing a bottom turn to setup a reo off the top with more of the same down the line. But then out of the blue the wave changed, a big surge of backwash in the form of a health challenge nearly knocked me off my feet and the wave went fat and slow. I could have attempted to carry on the same maneuver (and if I was or I may have pulled it off)but as mere mortal it was no longer appropriate, and no longer staying true to the wave.

What was needed was a big cutback towards the power source of the wave. In real life this translated to a taking a break from physio and downsizing our house to simplify life and reduce stress. This also meant letting down a lot of clients (and followers) which was hard but I know as surfers they understand the change in the flow of life.

Mentally things changed as well. Whereas before I was interested in all sorts of info and science regarding biomechanics and breathing, I found myself reading fiction and ancient myths ( )drawing and creating art and learning the guitar. It felt as if I was cutting back to the source of life itself by accessing more of my creative side- something I had been neglecting in recent years. I would go to pick up my phone to post an exercise and find myself picking up the guitar instead.

I feel my own wave changing again, as it always does and new opportunities arising to express myself on the wave of life. You might find my posts being more focused on philoSurfy, life and art rather than physiotherapy and movement but I have the feeling things will shift back once the wave changes shape again. 🤙🏼🌊
