It is really hard sometimes as a parent to not go with what everyone else seems to be doing as a parent. This story had some really good information for parents who are considering buying a device for their children and/or parents of children who already have a phone and/or device. It is really important to remember that regardless of how responsible we think our children are, their brains are still developing.
Worth a watch for all parents!

It is hard to know what to say on this day. So many people lost their homes and their loved ones.
While it has been a year, so many do not have a home yet and so many are still hurting. It is very hard to start healing when the journey is not over for so many.
My thoughts and aroha are with you all today.

Last week I had the privilege of presenting to the awesome staff at William Colenso College in Napier. William Colenso has students from Year 7 to Year 13. Many thanks to Whaea Jocelyn for inviting me and to all the staff who participated. It was awesome to work with teachers who are so passionate about supporting students.

The kaupapa for the day was 'Anxious and Reluctant Learners.' We know that a worried brain is a distracted brain therefore it so important to understand anxiety, how it impacts on learners and how teachers can support the students.

Thank you to Haley and the awesome teachers at Nature Kids in Hastings for hosting Little Ninjas last week. The kaupapa for the parent evening was 'Understanding & Managing Behaviour in a Positive way.' Thank you to all the parents who took the time to come. It was a great evening with lots of questions asked. I hope you all took something away from the evening to help support you.

The first week of term has flown by so fast! Hopefully it was a nice and easy transition back for all. It is likely that as the excitement of returning to school wears off, the exhaustion will kick in. So how do we recognise the signs of a tired child so that we can be proactive in managing their behaviour?

Remember, children communicate to us that they are tired through changes in their behaviour. Often, we will see changes in how intense or how often they are struggling with their behaviour. Sometimes it may just seem to get worse as time goes by. Maybe they could do things last week or in the holidays that they seem to be struggling to do now.

In order to manage this period of exhaustion, we will need to draw on our patience and take a supportive approach. One way of being proactive is to move bedtimes forward as the exhaustion kicks in and limit after school activities for the first few weeks. The heat in Hawkes Bay will definitely not help.

Just remember that getting back into a routine takes time for some children. Children (and adults) may get tired and grumpy until they get into the swing of things. Remember to breathe...and then try to understand what they are communicating through their behaviour so that you can support them to manage.

FYI 'After school restraint' is a nice way of saying losing their 'you know what' after school. 😁

Happy New Year!
I have had a few enquiries about whether Little Ninjas is still running - we definitely are. 2023 was a really busy year for Ninjas which meant that some things were neglected - social media was one of those things. I know that many people found the little tips helpful, so it will be a priority for 2024! x

The closer we get to the end of the year the more tired people are becoming. Tired, cranky children do not make life easy for anybody!
So how do we recognise the signs of a tired child so that we can be proactive in managing their behaviour? Children communicate to us that they are tired through changes in their behaviour. All children are different and may express their signs of tiredness in different ways. Below are some examples of behaviour of tired children.
BABIES & TODDLERS
- Rubbing eyes
- Extra clingy
- Wanting Mum or Dad more.
- Grizzly
- Wanting to be picked up/cuddled
SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN
- Excitable/Wired/Full of energy
- Grumpy
- Finding it harder to fall asleep
- Not listening (more than usual)
- Tantrums (espec at night)
- Clumsy
- Picky with food/or too wired to sit & eat
- Not paying attention
- More demanding
- Crying for no reason/over very small things
Remember the key is looking for a change in behaviour. It may be that it is happening more, or it seems much worse.
