Shingles is the reactivation of Varicella Zoster Virus, which is the virus that causes chickenpox.
Shingles is most common in people above 50 years of age. It is possible to get shingles more than once.
Shingles produces a painful rash that can last up to 2 weeks. Following this around 30% of people may develop nerve pain (PHN) which can last for months or years. Other complications include scarring, vision loss, weakness in the affected nerves and in rarer cases heart attack/stroke.
