Kia ora folks, it was a fantastic weekend here in Hawke Bay with lots of people out on the water enjoying the weather. We also had quite a busy weekend with two tows on Saturday, training on Sunday and two tows on Sunday, one in particular was very challenging.

We received a call from a vessel which had recovered 4 people out of the water after their small boat had hit the wake of another boat, and had flipped. A huge thanks to Hayden and his mates for that recovery.

We were called to bring the people back to Napier and to recover their boat, if possible. We managed to right the boat, pump out most of the water and bring everyone back to Napier, where the people were checked by Hato Hone, St John officers.

Once again, a big thanks to Hayden and his crew for their quick reaction to the capsize and picking up the people.

Yesterday our busy start to the boating season continued when we had an assist off Whirinaki, when a small boat had issues and then today something completely different. A team from WildBase Recovery, Palmerston North had rehabilitated a giant petrel, and they needed to release it back into the wild.

As you can see on arrival at our Base the bird was eager to get out and then when we arrived at the release site, about 3 miles offshore it had changed its mind and turned its back to the cage door!

With just a little bit of encourage we got the bird out and into the sea. Once in the sea it took a while to acclimatise to the wide open spaces as it ahd been inside for more than a month and then sitting in a cage for the drive over from Palmerston north.

This afternoon we received an urgent Police call regarding a kayaker who was in the water off Whirinaki. His kayak had become unstable and he could not get back onboard. He was able to alert Police who in turn activated our Coastguard crew.

A very big thanks to the crew of Loaded Dice and the kayaker who paddled out from the shore who also responded and assisted in the recovery process.

The kayaker was returned to our Base where he was checked by a Hato Hone, St John's ambulance crew and after spending a bit of time warming up, he was able to go home.

A quick message from our local Harbourmaster about divers in the Inner Harbour

Dive Hard have been granted a dive permit for tomorrow Thursday. They will be doing bio-security checks on vessels in the inner harbour. Vessels in the area are advised to keep clear of the divers and the Dive Hard safety vessel. Before starting engines check with the dive supervisor that it is safe to do so.

Please take extra care if boating in the area.

We had quite a busy Sunday this Labour Weekend. Our regular 2 hour Sunday morning training session and then in the afternoon 2 assists.

The first one was literally just off the Inner Harbour channel entrance and while we were doing that tasking we received a call for assistance from a vessel that had run into difficulties near Black Reef, Cape Kidnappers. As they didn't have a good position we used 'Mobile Locate' which enables us to send them a text which when they press reply to gives us a much better position.

When we arrived, there was a line of weed and rocks stopping us from getting close enough to the vessel. To get the situation sorted we worked with our SAR partners Hawke's Bay Surf Life Saving Search and Rescue Team. Then it was a quick tow back to Napier.

Early this afternoon we received a call about an overdue vessel which had been heading out to Pania Reef. We located a survivor at about 1455, and a second person was recovered about 1620. Unfortunately, he was deceased. Both were wearing lifejackets and while Police investigate the accident let's

all have empathy for the family and wider whanau and avoid speculation.

Our thoughts are with the whanau at this sad time.

We want to thank our SAR partners who helped in the search, Police SAR squad, Pania and Aramona from Napier Port, Lowe Corp Rescue helo, Napier Sailing Club, Starkeys and the Hawkes Bay Surf callout squad.

A great effort by everyone.

Just after 1200 we received a call from a member of the public about a swimmer clinging to a 200m buoy off Hardinge Rd shouting for help.

While we activated our crew, we also put out a call on vhf channel 62 to see if there were any boats in the area who could assist. There was and they recovered the swimmer a few minutes later

So big thanks to the crew on Squid Ink 11 for recovering the swimmer. The swimmer is well he was just exhausted.

This incident underlines that search and rescue truly is a team effort.

Today we carried out one of our bigger taskings. Early this morning a converted ships lifeboat which was travelling from Napier to Auckland had engine failure off Portland Is. We departed about 0830 and we were alongside them at 1030. After a quick hook up it was the start of a much slower trip back to Napier, we arrived back about 5:30pm. Even though we had a lot of rain, fortunately, the seas remained relatively flat.

Although the straight-line distance to the vessel was about 41 nautical miles (76kms) we had to remain inside the 12-mile limit which meant a longer trip, out of 52 nautical miles (96kms), a total of over 104 nautical miles (193kms). The requirement to remain inside the 12-mike limit is a factor of our skipper's tickets, if lives had been at risk we can and do cross the 12-mile limit. You can see the effect at the end of the video.

We were lucky to see a great variety of sea life, dolphins, seals, a shark as well as numerous birds.
