Manawatia a Matariki 🌟
20th June – Matariki & World Refugee Day

As the stars of Matariki rise, we are gifted a time to reflect, reset, and look forward—eyes on the past, hearts open to the future. Matariki invites us to pause, to honour those who came before us, and to carry their lessons into the new year with hope and aroha.

This year, Matariki coincides with World Refugee Day—a moment to stand in solidarity with those who have been forced to flee their homes. Solidarity is more than words. It’s kindness in action, empathy through listening, and integrity in how we show up for others. It’s about creating space for stories to be heard, lives to be honoured, and futures to be rebuilt with dignity.

At Toi Toi Medical, we celebrate this season with the values that shape who we are—kindness, empathy, integrity, whānau, and yes, a little fun too. We are proud to stand beside our refugee communities, embracing the richness they bring to our collective story.

As Matariki lights the sky, may it guide us in walking gently with others and building a future where everyone feels safe, seen, and supported.

Excellent videos on alcohol from Victory Community Centre

Some fantastic resources to share today. Our Sabien and Norma have worked with our friends at Multicultural Nelson Tasman Inc to produce a series of educational videos aimed at raising awareness about the potential harm of alcohol consumption within our communities. These videos are designed to cater to the needs of our refugee and migrant populations, providing crucial information in a sensitive and supportive manner, and in their own language.

Check out the videos in Burmese, Spanish, Karenni, Nepali, Chin Hakka as well as English in the comments below. A big thank you to Ana who put the videos together, to Kate Garnyk for illustration and to the awesome interpreters: Deep, Lily, Ruth, Ana & Mooda. Fabulous mahi…

FEE INCREASE

From 1 July 2023 we will be increasing our fees, Government subsidies have not been increased sufficiently to cover the cost of appointments, so this must be passed on to our patients.

We understand that this is not ideal in this current climate, however for Toi Toi Medical to remain open and to continue providing care to our community this is a necessary increase.

There will be a charge for all services received at Toi Toi Medical – this means that some previously free appointments for example – annual diabetes reviews will now incur a $15 patient co-payment charge.

Standard consultation fees will still apply to normal consults.

Please talk to one of our team if you are having trouble paying for visits. We are happy to look at all options and you should not avoid seeking medical attention when you require it.

Please consider signing in support of the future of General Practice in NZ

General Practice services are stretched and under threat, and people are waiting longer to see their family doctor as a result of workforce issues and underfunding.

Tēnā koe

Today there are 49 new cases of COVID-19 in Nelson. There are a total of 81 cases in our region (77 in Nelson Tasman and 4 in Marlborough).

The Nelson Marlborough community has done a good job of holding off Omicron for as long as possible but with the number of cases in Nelson increasing sharply, it indicates undetected transmission in the community.

APPROACH IN PHASE 2
🔺 With the increase in numbers, we are shifting to aligning to the Ministry of Health case numbers. Please note there may be slight delay in reporting of numbers due to cut-off periods.
🏪 Instead of locations of interest being used to identify casual contacts, we should all assume we could at any point have come into contact with COVID-19. That means we should be monitoring for symptoms and if needed getting a PCR test.
🤧 The most common early symptoms of the Omicron variant are a sore or scratchy throat and a runny nose.

CONTACT TRACING
📱 As cases grow, we will use digital technology more. We may communicate using text or email. There will be support for people who do not have access to or are not confident using technology.
📱 If you test positive, you may be sent a text with an access code and link to an online contact tracing form.
