A spinal injury can result whenever a significant blow or force is applied to the spine or head.

Consider these steps if you are attending to a co-worker who's showing signs of a spinal/neck injury:
• Treat all unconscious accident victims as potential spinal injury patients, and handle them gently and carefully
• Keep head, neck and spine in a straight line as much as possible
• Semi-rigid cervical collars are not recommended in first aid

If you suspect your co-worker has had an electrical shock, dial 111 immediately. Electricity can be deadly, so don't approach the patient unless you are positive the power is off and the patient/surroundings are not "live."

While you wait for help, make sure to avoid doing any of these things:
• Give any medications or drinks
• Break or prick blisters
• If clothing is stuck to the burn, do not pull it away
• Put ointments, oils, butter, or any substance on the burn
• Leave the patient alone

Based on the nature of the business, as an Owner/Manager, you can conduct a risk assessment to decide if a first aid room is required on your business property.

When choosing to build one, don't forget to consider these 3 things:
– The distance between different work areas
– How long it would take emergency services to reach your workplace
– If you have remote or isolated workers.

An injury assessment is a way to identify & assess the care required for the patient.

Only perform an assessment when medical assistance is NOT on the way, and it is performed only to establish whether you NEED to get medical assistance.

Conducting a thorough Head to Toes check can help you arrive at a better conclusion about the severity of the injury. The areas include:
- Head
- Eyes
- Nose
- Ears
- Neck
- Shoulders
- Shoulder Blades
- Collarbones

Most factories use chemicals for their daily production purposes. Anyone handling these chemicals must read and understand safety data on all chemicals before using them.

If your workmate gets exposed to a chemical injury, it can be pretty severe. So, call 111 immediately and follow these First Aid treatments to help out until the medics arrive:

• Remove the patient to a safe area.
• Remove chemical & contaminated clothing/jewellery ASAP.
• Brush powdered chemicals from the skin.
• Run cool water onto the affected area for at least 1 hour, continuing until the stinging stops. Also, make sure you avoid transferring these chemicals to unaffected areas.

Eye injuries can be pretty common in a factory/workplace that uses many chemicals. All eye injuries need to be checked by a doctor because being left unchecked can lead to blindness.

When using chemicals in the workplace, it's crucial to read and understand all the information sheets on the chemicals before they are used.

If chemicals get into your workmate's eye, dial 111 immediately and try out these steps to help the patient during the meantime:
• Don't let the patient rub the eyes
• Use an eyewash station - hose or tap. Open the eye and flush thoroughly with water for as long as tolerated.
• Have affected eye facing down, so water/chemical washes away without injuring the good eye
• Flushing the eye(s) takes priority over immediate transfer for medical care
• Cover both eyes with gauze/dressings/damp cloth if a patient needs to be moved. Bandage lightly.

A workplace first aid kid can have pain relief medicine like paracetamol or aspirin. However, it's important to be aware that some of these medicines could make certain people, like pregnant women, sick.

In a workplace first aid kit, you can only carry in pack sizes similar to those bought over the counter at a general store or pharmacy. Also, you must leave these medicine in the manufacturer's original pack to have access to relevant information about dosage, expiry date, warnings, etc.

Medicine can only be given by someone medically trained, or the patient can take it themselves.
