We are really, really excited to be collaborating with the Nelson Seed Library on their next hands on workshop, Learning to Save Seeds.
This workshop will teach community members how to save seeds from homegrown vegetables and fruit.
Participants will learn practical methods for processing different types of seeds, which will then be stored at the Nelson Seed Library and made available on a koha (pay-what-you-can) basis.
We will also demonstrate a pedal thresher, winnower, and polisher used for processing riceβequipment funded through NCCβs Climate Adaptation Community Fund. For many attendees, this will be a rare opportunity to learn how grain is processed in Te Waipounamu.
This event aims to:
β’ Build practical food-growing and seed-saving skills
β’ Strengthen local food resilience
β’ Support low-income families to grow healthy food
β’ Share cultural knowledge and foster community connection.
This project is Aligned with Nelson City Council Policy on
Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions- by providing seeds on a koha basis enabling more people to grow food locally, reducing reliance on transported food and lowering emissions.
Climate Change Adaptation
With increasing impacts such as drought and flooding affecting food systems, growing food locally strengthens community resilience and food security.
Community Partnerships Activity Management Plan
This event promotes social cohesion by bringing diverse communities together. For example:
β’ Rice is an important cultural taonga for many Asian communities
β’ Demonstrating its uses (including rice straw) encourages cultural sharing
β’ Skill-sharing builds connection and resilience during current cost of living pressures
There is real community benefit to be had by attending this workshop.
